Just stayed at a camp site on a non-awning pitch. The paper rules they gave us said that if you are on a non-awning pitch, then only wind out awnings can be used.

So my question is - is that normal? Are awning pitches always just for the massive conservatories that I see on the sides? Can I go to a non-awning pitch and wind out my awning (or press a button as it's electric) ?

Or is it just case by case?

I was on Rowntree Park CAMC last week I'd booked a with awning pitch, but when I got there, there were some non-awning pitches that seemed in more favourable positions, when I asked about selecting one of those instead the gentleman said they are probably booked and the non-awning pitches are dearer than the with awning ones! I was baffled as why that should be.

Is that using the app or the website? I've not experienced any difficulties booking a pitch from the website.
Both..... Specifically when looking at booking availability at two different main sites the calender showed limited availability, so clicked, to book before spaces had gone. The system immediately said that there was no availability. To make sure I hadn't been 'pipped at the post' I closed the App and then tried again with exactly the same result. I phoned central bookings to be told that hey are aware of the 'glitch' and that there were several spare pitches. On arrival at the first site the warden told me that the

Not sure if post length is limited so here's the rest...... The 2nd site had not been notified of the requested auto balance payment (ticked Yes online, not on App). Guess what they told me the system is useless on many fronts.
The CMC sites may well be almost full but that doesn't mean full off happy customers does it?

We have never stayed on any UK site run by clubs such as CAMC. We’ve only ever stayed on sites on the continent.

I often read these threads out of curiosity, as the quoted camping costs in UK sometimes seem a little excessive. To a point, I can understand high prices, UK has high land values and services costs. I sometimes also come away with the impression that there appear to be loads of very petty rules coupled with an over keenness to enforce.

Camping on continental sites we’ve never heard of any stuff about parking pointing this way or that and not being allowed to put up tents or awnings etc. The approach to camping just seems to be much more laid back. You declare number of people/dogs, agree cost, then within reason you can do what you like on your pitch. The only strict rule/restriction we’ve ever seen is bans on BBQs in places with fire risk, this tends to be imposed by local authorities.
Me too, agree with every word. Sheer lunacy to put up with all the carp of British club sites

It's good to read that more and more people only use sites abroad because it means our little plan is working and there will be more places on UK sites for us who have never had any problems and are happy to stay on the reasonably price venues we have found. Keep it up Lads! PS. Where is this Club site with Carp fishing? 😆

Perhaps a definitive answer to the old age question is provided below by Highlands End campsite for the recent stormy weather, Motorhomes have canopies!

Below is some guidance and advice below from our experience that will help you:-

• Your awing has storm straps
• Motor home canopies should be retracted

Seems like commonsense to me

Apologies for using the 'C' word in my last post, but its just occured to me why is commonsense so rare?

Maybe it needs renaming raresense?

An awning is defined as a closable tent intended to be fixed to a stationary vehicle or to stand free of the vehicle. So say the Camping & Caravan Club

Is that not clear enough , what is on the paper about a wind out , hand or powered they both wind out?

very interesting ,,i went to there site at Keswick and was ordered to put me fold out canopy away as i booked a non awning site, wish i had looked into it more ,,
I checked with CAMC and a canopy is definitely allowed on a non awning pitch, but I seem to recall CACC did not have clear information on it.

Just out of curiosity, why don't we ever see wind out sun canopies (did you see what I did there...) on caravans? Is it because we'll think they're burger vans in the lay by's of our green & pleasant land?
I had one on a caravan some years back. It was a special lightweight one designed for caravans as the motorhome ones are very heavy.

For that site, yes it's clear. My question was is that normal? Some other sites I've stayed at did not make the distinction (or at least I did not dig deeply into the t&cs). The manufacturer calls my wind out an awning in the product name, so I feel my question was at least in part justified.
