Now i cant think of a problem its getting easier and easier to have an overdue fine on your door matt is it a good idea. If you inform the insurance company. and a son or Daughter can open any letters recieved
Its quick to do with DVLA and change it when you get back

Asking for a friend and any drawbacks or complications to make this idea a mistake

Can't you just get someone to pop in every now and then and check for post? Of course you need to trust them, or if you don't want them in your actual house put a self contained letterbox outside and seal up your door's lette box (so the postie knows which one to use), then give the 'someone' a key to the box so they can check for you.

Just make sure the someone knows to check it properly and open the envelopes ... my FIL & wife check ours but despite us saying to open everything they didn't, consequently hubby missed an appointment for a NHS check (we didn't know it was coming) which was really annoying as it meant that someone else could've had that appointment ... not sure what to do next time ... might get the neighbour to check for us instead.

I aways checked my parents and could usually deal with most things

But I would not want anyone going through my post but most is email.now anyway.

We still get mail for the previous owners......23 years after they left.

Opened one by mistake two or three years ago.....it was from their private pension company.
You'd think they would query why they had no mail from them and provide their 'new' address.
We put them in the mail box now, the one that gets collected once a fortnight by the council.

We tend to go away for 2 months for our longest trips. We do ...... nothing in prep other than let our neighbours know in case of emergency, turn water and electric off (bar fridge,/freezer) and that's it.

All important stuff is managed online (finance, utilities etc)

Re fines. I really don't anticipate getting any! Our long term travelling tends to be abroad so actually it wouldn't be an issue (bar travelling to the ferry)

I do feel you are over thinking this!

If I ever got Mail through my door with someone else’s name on it I open it regardless of my wife saying you can’t do that
My postbox my it’s my business to open it

Apparently now if you pick up a fine abroad they cannot obtain any UK details so no fines sent home 😁
I know someone who has driven around Austria for the last 2 years without any go box thing and been flashed by a few cameras and has not had anything come through :whistle2: :whistle2:

Probably if this person visits that country again they may be locked up😂😂

Your wife is correct, you are legally not permitted to open anyone else's post, we've had stuff in our letter box that has obviously been put through in error, I would NEVER ever consider opening it.

Perhaps i should have been more specific, If it has my postal address on it with someone elses name i will open it regardsless
If it had someone elses name and address on it, its clearly an error and i would give it back to the postman

Our DIL pops in, waters the plants, and opens any important looking letters for us. To be honest there aren’t many these days and anything important can be done from where we are. As for expected fines and brown envelopes, I’m a throwback from the George Graham Arsenal manager day’s and would never stoop so low 🤔
