What's stopping you buying a new van?

Because after nearly 8 years of ownership we have the van exactly how we want it, it has all our toys and is a delight to drive and sleep in.
Me too Clive. My 09 Iveco Charisma 11 is supurb, and it carries the Smart in the 'proper' garage .

When we first decided we wanted a MH, lots of dealers told us most people make a mistake when they buy their first one as they didn’t think of the layout that best suited them,we were not going to make that mistake and hired a few before hand so that we would know exactly what worked for us.
Having found it, it’s been an absolute dream and we are truly grateful to be so blessed. We thought about upgrading it only because it’s now approaching 3 year old and with SH values being so high we thought the uplift might not be too hard on our wallet! So we went to the NEC motorhome show last year to look at the latest model to ours only to be thoroughly disappointed in its ‘new’ quite frankly stupid design! I’m not sure if anyone else has encountered this but lots of these new vans now have a large step in the shower cubicle and also in the toilet wash room?? As if they weren’t small enough already they decided to make the spaces smaller by adding a step! When I asked the salesman for the reason he simply shrugged his shoulders and said.. it’s not popular I admit!
I just can’t understand why the ‘New Age’ generation as we call them.. feel the need to redesign something that works perfectly well only to say it’s new! Hence we will be hanging on to our van for a while as it ain’t broke so no need to fix it! 👍

we were all set to change, but when we looked theres only a few we fancied that would do, and there was non of them about for sale, so with 2 years left before another C1 application, we have decided to keep what we have, if it needs to go in 2 years we will face that then, but if it does it will be 2 years older and cheaper so more likely to be able to sell on the private market as it will be in the scope of private buyers.

So for now its upgrade time

I've thought about it, looked, but nah.

My current van has things I like, that I can't get in a 'newer' new van:
Comfortmatic gearbox
No adblue
2 sliding hab doors
5m length
and on the hab side, option of 4 travel seats/ 2 bench seats/ dbl bed/ 2 single beds; kitchen with more workspace than my previous 7.2 meter C class, full wetroom, tons of storage, etc.
Oh and 680 kg payload so I never need to worry.

'New' new vans all seem to be advertised as luxury, when I prefer basic. They have too much 'stuff' going on. My van is for travelling and sleeping. Unless I'm meeting up with others, my stops are an absolute max of 3 nights, more often 2, but usually 1. I've done up to 3 months on a trip. I don't want to be carting a house around. 'Bigger' and 'more' isn't always better or more desirable.

As long as I get my second C1 application we will keep what we have as it’s got everything we require and I have put a lot of work into it so as long as I can still drive it we are keeping it.
As an aside we have not seen anything else that we would like not that we are looking very hard😊

We have looked t used van for many years, never intending to change from our B584.
The B584 is solidly built and has the space we like, the table was a nuisance from day one so we had it ‘chopped’ and hinged so that sorted that.
We have recently looked at several non UK vans and the Rapido and Cathargo, of a certain age, seem quite good!
Still not looking to change yet but maybe………sometime soon.
I have a 680B, please tell me how you changed the table as they are a pain, I have put a smaller round one on and it's a bit better but not thought of hinging it.

We have a 2015 Majestic 125. It has had its problems over the years, but nothing major.

Mileage

The mileage is very low at just 13,000.

Reasons to Upgrade

  • Modern vans have much better layouts, including drop-down beds.
  • Vehicle Warranty coverage.
  • Potentially greater reliability.

Reasons Against Upgrading

  • AdBlue issues – Storage problems due to crystallisation.
  • Cost – A new van is a significant expense.
  • Hidden costs – The additional expenses required to maintain the so-called warranty. A prime example is the habitation check, which is often little more than a box-ticking exercise.
Our van has composite construction, and during previous habitation checks, they even provided a damp reading chart—unsurprisingly showing no issues. The only possible damp could come from condensation. I eventually stopped paying for these checks as they were clearly money for nothing. Over the course of a 10-year warranty, we would likely pay more for these unnecessary checks than any potential structural repairs.

Conclusion

On balance, it’s probably best to keep the van we have.

Looking to buy another van but a lot of greedy people out there.
Will keep on looking .
If nothing appears over the next year .Will probably jack it in.

When I say 'new' I mean 'new to you'

This thread isn't for those who are buying or have bought new vans.

It is for those who in normal times might have upgraded by now. Or those who are thinking about it but haven't

Why haven't you?

Prices too high?
Part exchange offers too low?
Anything else? Why aren't you upgrading/exchanging?
Trade in values not good enough!🧐

Not convinced a new van would offer anything extra worth having other than 'its new'. Our layout suits us and any change of vehicle is expensive. Better to spend the money upgrading equipment if needed.
