What's it worth

Where do I find the buyers guide please.

We are going to view it tomorrow and see what they will come down to.
Why would they need to "come down". If you were selling and believed the price is right would you "come down" This may be their pride and joy so parting with it may be a hard decision for them.

Well just paid my £20. Hope this works. I have not been on a holiday for over 15 years so have saved on that. We are going to view it tomorrow and see what they will come down to. We are hoping to go away most weekends so it will get used a lot. Apart from the cambelt is there any other questions we should ask.
Also many thanks for your replies they are much appreciated.
Several more things for you to think about

What maximum weight is it plated at? If it is more than 3500kg you will need to have a C1 licence to be able to drive it.

What is the payload, i.e. the difference between the maximum weight and the weight empty. To know that you need to get them to put it on a weighbridge when it is empty. Never trust the maker's figure. You will need at least 450kg payload if there are two of you, but more if you are taking the family.

Check for damp and rust. These are the two most expensive problems with older motorhomes. So get a damp meter and check all over. Also have a good look underneath, so wear old cloths or take a boiler suit.

Check for a regular service history. Don't worry too much about high mileage, motorhomes are built on commercial vehicles designed to clock up the miles. Low mileage means that it has been standing unused for long periods, which could cause more problems

Check all the appliances to make sure they work including toilet water system etc. Especially so with the fridge which will cost a lot of money to replace.

edit: there are two decent looking Hymers close to your budget in the Classified ads on this forum

The reason is that they have only had it one year and it says on the ad that they owned it from 2008 to 2021.

Thank you all for your information.

Whilst motorhome prices certainly went up back in the spring/early summer I think they have now come back down to a steady if firm price.

We bought ours end of 2019.
Today, for the same money, I could buy one 2 years older.

It is me again. I have just been on Ebay and the same motorhome is advertised again with a different item number but the same seller.

If you think it is dodgy you should report it to Ebay. Look for the "Report item" in blue and underlined on the right hand side towards the top of the listing.

It is definitely a scam. They have now taken both off. I have tried looking for the report item but these have been taken off but I still have it in my watch list.

There are literally dozens of them on there , also cars ,vans, caravans, etc;etc; on a daily basis. The one you have seen twice now will no doubt reappear again tomorrow.

Dear Gus

I am absolutely disgusted and thought I would try and email Ebay but cannot find anything. I have reported it to Action Fraud and filled the form in.

Many thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.

I wouldn't bother, ebay aren't bothered. They'll take it down and it'll reappear a few days later.
I used to report some but too many to do now.
If you really want to report it there is a report button on the advert

Hi I looked for the report button but could not find it.

Thank you all for your responses.

I found the report button but would like to start a thread to that everyone can report it. They are asking for £6000 to be transferred via bank transfer. It is so very sad if they scam innocent people who are genuine. Many thanks again for your help and replies

The B574 is in my view one of the best layouts, smaller fridge but useable.
As to price it so depends on condition, I have bought a few the last was in 2018 at £16k.
Full history but poorly maintained, which is quite common for motorhomes, they are treated like a car, that is far from its core base as a light commercial.
Front hub bearings are a common area to be forgotten, not a difficult job with the right facilities.
Rear brakes get forgotten as with brake fluid changes etc
Tyres get left to the ravages of UV damage and not changed as the have a good tread!
Brake hoses get forgotten and not changed
A service history means very little in my book.
Clutch wear is worthy of investigation, the clutches are quite small for the size of a motorhome, ok on a delivery van.
Suffice to say there are gotcha points, however in the main a good choice in my view. Price well OTT unless it is tiptop and maintained with a full schedule of works carried out and time related parts changed long before failure

Went to see the 2004 Hymer 544 last night. Was with the guy for nearly 3 hours and took it for a test drive. It was exceptionally clean on the inside and a bit dirty on the outside (due to it being outside). Price £28995. I forgot to have a look at the log book and all the paper work though. They are going away this weekend in it and I said I would ring him back this morning. He said he would come down a bit in price but not a lot. Are Hymer's a good make?

Thanking you all in anticipation again. Jolly

Are Hymer's a good make?
Put it this way, if I was buying a 2004 motorhome I would be looking for a Hymer. Ones of that age have a great reputation for being well built. Of course you are stuck with a Fiat or Mercedes base and that may let you down, as could any other vehicle of that age, and the same may apply to the appliances. But the Hymer bit should be pretty good.

BUT you still must check for damp with a damp meter and rust underneath.

Thank you for the information. After a long discussion and being first time motorhome buyers, we have agreed to buy it. The inside was perfect. I spent about 2 hours just sitting inside of it. The guy took it for a test drive with us and let hubby have a go. The inside has been all upholstered in quality furnishings and is really comfortable, it has been really well looked after. I am now quite anxious hoping I have done the right thing.

Again thank you all for your patience and consideration in replying.

Great news, I'm sure you won't regret it, I love my B544.
It did look a very tidy example.
Did you check for cambelt change as I suggested ?
Have you checked the mot history with the registration number ?

Yes great news. I have a 2004 655 starline (Mercedes) and I love it. It’s our 5th van and a keeper 👍😷🥃

Thank you all so much. Checked the cambelt history as suggested and MOT etc. Cambelt changed in 2018 and MOT all okay.

Gosh I am nervous now. Will pick it up next week. Mind I did spend over 2 hours sitting in it to make sure it was not claustrophobic and the test drive was good. Nervous and excited at the same time as this is the 2nd big purchase we have made, the first being our home which we only viewed for one hour but that is another tale to tell one day LOL

Again thank you all

We'll be wanting to hear about your first trip away, be sure to let us know how you get on, and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask

Sold my 574 last year, only reason was travelling solo it was more than enough and not getting used to the full.
So downsized slightly and without the drop down bed

Advertised gumtree on the Sunday sold on the Monday to a guy from Northampton who knew a bargain when he saw one.

A fair price at that time all happy

I will update on our first trip out in it. May I say thank you to JR as both my husband works in the NHS and I work in a private hospital.

Many thanks everyone. Have a lovely weekend.
