What towing strap?

We have family in Texas, winter weekends often spent getting dirty with atv’s and trucks. They use stretch tow ropes so the pull is softened thus reducing potential damage. The tow vehicle can really hit the gas, then the recoil pulls you out.

One problem is where to attach the towing rope/strap/chain. When replacing my 2001 Boxer front crossbeam cum radiator support i found the front chassis section corroded, a common fault. Would hate to have tried towing using the threaded eye as it would likely have torn the front section and possibly the radiator loose. Those threaded eyes are OK on a flat good surface but probably not designed to pull your van out of mud. I have repaired the chassis section yet still unhappy to use the eye. Not sure yet how i would connect up should i get stuck, have considered making up two 6mm flat plates with a large hole and drilled to fit using the crossmember bolts. Would then need the the fibreglass ' bumper' cut to allow access to the second attachment. More paranoia sets in then thinking do i need a spreader bar to stop any sideways pull damaging the bumper? May not always have the option of towing out backwards so do worry about these things. I suppose the simplest solution is fit a second tow eye, cut a hole in the bumper to match the existing one and trust to luck.

Reference please as its news to me.
Having just searched it seems you are right. I was certain about 1992 the law changed and we were only allowed to tow on a fixed bar

My Uncle taught me years ago when I was a kid but I’ve forgotten now 🙄

Me too, but it wasn’t my uncle.

I could also make a Turk’s Head and a Monkey’s Fist but, alas, no more. 🥲
