What spare parts do you carry?

Had the fridge play up several times with 240v element and gas jet blocking up. Even when a domestic engineer is found the answer is yes I can fix it but as your fridge is 20 yrs old I can't get the parts. So spare parts include thermostat,240 v element and gas jet assembly kept in small jiffy bag. And as Sod said the fridge has worked perfectly ever since

In 1968 Sedge's chap and some of his mates decided to go to Playa de Aro and rented a flat for their fortnight. His dad lent them his car - a Zephyr 6. He was pretty handy with cars and assembled the spares he thought he should reasonably carry AND the tools he knew he'd need 'if'. Blokes at work regaled him with tales of all the things that could go wrong and droned on at him and droned on about it ad infinitum to the degree that he lost his temper in the finish and retorted that for all he knew the ruddy prop shaft might go halfway up a Pyrenee - so did they expect him to carry one of them too?

And these days of course we already carry one thing none of us had in the 60s and 70s when we decided to explore sur le continong - a ruddy mobile phone to call our breakdown service if we ever need em!

Credit card and mobile phone mostly. I do carry some tools, cable ties, duct tape and bulbs. I suppose it depends on how you use your van as to what’s advisable to carry.

I do have replacement wiper blades. Garages charge silly prices for them and they don't take much space. Also silicone spray.

Many, many, many spares in our van, most of which end up on other people's vans. If fact, if we had the spare body panels as well I am sure we could build another motorhome.

Over the last year alone we have replaced, for other people, a fridge burner, a gas regulator, countless fuses, cleaned a few fridge flues, pointed a boiling battery out, removed an engine chip that was causing intermittent breakdowns, loaned out extension lead and blow air heater and or hairdryer a few times to warm engine or people (winter camping in the alps).

Jeez if I had to carry all the spares some of you folks carry I would sell the van and buy something else I could rely on.

Ha ha teknik, you and me both re the 20 x year old fridge and spares. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

What can I say to all that - nothing, other than if I do break down I want to be on the same aires as Jock @JockandRita!!
Seriously though I think I could manage with a water pump failure if it happened - I’d just use bottled for me and the dog. I carry fuses, fresh water hose connectors of every shape, cable ties, rescue tape and gaffer tape along with a set of bulbs. There is also a pair of drain cover handles(?) in my continental box with other bits of gubbins I’ve never used. I too carry a towing strap and for some reason I bought one rated at 5 ton - god only knows why!! Lol
Hope I never need all this as quite frankly I wouldnt know what to do with it all.
Having said all that I did have to bodge up a temp fix to a dropped water tank whilst at the side of the road in France and the towing strop would have been used if I’d remembered I had it!!!

I have to admit to be in don't carry anything camp, OK we have a spare pump for the Alde but that just because the last one still worked sometimes so I kept it, I have a toolkit with cable ties, bulbs, fuses, screws, tape etc etc but having no crystal ball to see what will be needed I don't bother, worked OK so far;)

Don't forget a spare cap for the Thetford cassette - it's rather depressing watching yours disappear into a sewer! And I have a habit of leaving water inlet caps on walls. Another item I have had problems with in the past is the Hoselock connector, which would normally be attached to a water tap.

For water and fuel caps(both lockable) I leave the keys in, on the same bunch as the ignition key, then I cannot drive off without the cap.

Come tell, what is it, I might need some "just in case"

It’s great stuff and looks a bit like electric tape but it is wider and very stretchy - great for leaks as you wrap it round the problem whilst stretching and it seals any leak or drip as it shrink compresses. Have used on both mine and a friends water pipes.

It's a new one to me too Carol. Thanks.

Rescue Tape.

I might get myself a roll of this.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Otherwise known as 'Self-amalgamating tape'. I have been using it for decades on my boat. Excellent stuff.

Up until recently I could've said ..A spare tyre around my waist:rofl: But I've been dieting so seeing the results.(y)

Well, having just had the fourth fuel filter replaced in 9 years (Ducato x250) I’m sending for a complete filter and filter housing, because once you disassemble them they never last.
I think I could replace one myself now, so I’ll feel confident to go anywhere!
Hate the smell of diesel!

Domestic water pump, water pump and did I say water pump.:gum:

I can see it now...........

Management ... “ I’m just going to have a shower and wash my hair “
Mike ...... “ Sorry darling it looks like the water pump has gone phuttt “
Management ...... “ That’s a shame, will it take you long to fix it ? “
Mike .... “ Cant fix it dear it needs a new one.”
