Isn’t this what we are here for? To engage with fellow travellers and to exchange ideas, tips etc.
Don’t give him a hard time, others who are not brave enough to ask the questions themselves are learning too. :)

Don't forget to get your steering wheel changed over to the other side.

Hope his sat nav know which way you go round the roundabouts there seems to be thousands of them over there. Boy am I glad I have an automatic.

Hi bigtree
not sure what your point is, I though asking a question was what this forum was all about people helping others,
I myself find it prudent to ask questions that I am unsure of for something I want to know.
If you don't want to answer that is up to you.
Just because I've asked a lot of different questions about my future trip isn't that sensible, I find it amazing you are being this way, and saying "just stay in the UK" because I'm keen to find out all I can before I go is a bit harsh.
I want to thank all who have answered my questions I think I'll leave this now, not sure I want to carry on with this thread when people are being a bit negative.
But Thanks for your input.
Best Wishes Tony
My first trip in my motorhome was from Scotland to Jerez,Spain to see the Motogp. Did it on my own as my wife was still working, you get by and don't starve. European supermarkets are sooo much better than anything in Britain, just do it and don't forget to let us know where you go and what you do. PS I went from a VW Caravelle to an 8m A class, was rather interesting.
Trev. ;)

Reminds me of my late mums comment when we did the shopping for her. "Mum could only get organic veg today", her reply "I'm not eating that muck". Oh how true, fertilised with muck.

Hi Everybody
I wasn't going to reply to this thread but I feel you need to know where I'm coming from.
As I’ve said before, with the spoken you have a better understanding of what he or she is saying as you have various things that indicate to you in what context he or she is saying it in.

The typed word however can come across not as the originator intended, but typing “Just stay in the UK” comes across to me as, stop asking stupid questions and just get on with it.

I’m getting very excited about going to the EU and in some way asking questions with you guys and gals is a way of me sharing my excitement.

I live on my own have no one to share my excitement with and like to think of you chaps as sort of an adopted family who I can share the excitement and this part of my life with.

That is probably why I take comments out of context.

Best Wishes Tony

@Brakers Take the few flippant comments on going abroad more as a clue as to how simple it is, not a reflection of Funsters' impatience or rudeness. It'll be a doddle. Enjoy.

@Brakers, you will love it, France is so laid back, supermarkets everywhere with an amazing variety of gorgeous foods. Then there are the local market days where you can buy all manner of local goods and very fresh veg and fish.. Parking is free or very cheap. Don't worry about the language just try a few basics like merci, bonjour and bonne journée. Then à lot of smiling and arm waving and you're in. The roads ( when the French are not protesting) are quite and you will enjoy the pleasure of driving again. It's nothing like the mayhem of UK roads . Enjoy your trip and keep us up to date. :france:

Brakers after you disembark just find the first supermarket, you will then be hooked for life! The supermarkets often give free samples, that is how I tried andouillete, it took an awfy lot of wine to get rid of the greasy disgusting taste from my mouth.

Not on the NHS.
I think you are forgetting that you are allowed to gender determination on a daily basis, so today a bloke tomorrow a gal. Simples or not as the case may be. The world's gone mad LOL

European supermarkets are sooo much better than anything in Britain

Why do we accept what our supermarkets provide us with in the UK? I think they have changed the nation's diet, and therefore its health, all in the interest of shareholder dividends. Just 20-odd miles away is a whole new world of choice, freshness and unpackaged local products, and it's much the same in all the main European countries we visit. Why do they celebrate such wonderful produce and we ignore ours?

Many people return to the UK after a spell abroad, trying to create their favourite delicacies from where they've been only to find it's impossible to get the same flavours. Hydroponically produced regular-shaped tomatoes from Holland can never have the same taste as those ripened naturally under the sun. The water content, nutrients, and therefore taste have all been sacrificed in the interests of commercialism . . and we just accept it! We have bought eggs in France that last until we're in Greece ... we have bought eggs in Greece that make the three week journey back to Scotland, and they are still fresher than those we can buy at our local Tesco.

Brakers should not worry about food, and shouldn't plan too much in advance ... you're on an adventure that could change your lives. Discover the foods available wherever you are - embrace them & celebrate them ... let them surprise you.

Because their data suggests that low prices and convenience is what attracts the most customers. They, and many other retail chains selling every type of products from clothing to lawnmowers compete on price.
For tasty good quality ingreedyments one has to buy from the more expensive farm shops and specialist retailers.
The fish sections in all the U.K. supermarkets are absolutely dreadful with regard to choice and quality vs those in France. Living on the South coast I'm lucky that I can buy direct from the boats.

We do have more available better food here for sure but after nearly 15 years I find the choice of preprepard food is much more evident . In the U.K. on a visit i am so tempted by the choice of stuff I don’t need , isnt healthy and I have missed lol . If any of you travellers are looking for fish in a supermarket do use Intermarché as they have their own boats so fish is very fresh .

The only real problem with France is the French but if you can put up with them the rest is fine. The food is ok ( although in my opinion not all it’s cracked up to be), and the big supermarkets are like ours , only better.

I hope you have a great time and that this trip will be the first of many(y)

I don’t hear that many people say they have a problem with the French or putting up with them. I personally find them friendly and welcoming for the most part and feel privileged to visit their country and enjoy all it offers to motorhomers and tourists in general.

Apart from them snuggling close parking their van within 2 foot of mine, and talking right outside my van very loudly at 8:30 in morning when I'm still in bed trying to sleep.

It's like looking in a mirror - we find that the people in most other European countries tend to reflect the way we speak to them. If we are pleasant, then that's what we get in return. We have a little knowledge of several languages and we use them whenever we can, even if we make complete fools of ourselves. At no time have we found any nation to be unfriendly. An English friend from Greece was asked by his old employer to go back for a couple of months to help with some work ... he said it took him a week to stop saying good morning to everyone as no one ever responded. In most countries, such simple formalities are essential.

I understand that UK supermarkets promote low prices and convenience to their customers, as do the French - alongside their other products. UK groups have made it the main thrust of their businesses and I believe they are not grocers at all, but banks by virtue of groceries. In any case, French supermarkets are often cheaper if you compare like for like. By virtue of their exploitation of the British public, they have opened the door to stores like Lidl & Aldi who do local, fresh, seasonal produce better than us.

We are now retired to France & eat out regularly. We live in the area Entre Deux Mers about an hour from Bordeaux. Best bet is to look out for places that have a lot of artisans' vans outside. Usually pay about €13 for the lunch menu-3 courses-starter maybe soup or pastry & salad, meat or fish main & choice of several sweets, maybe including wine & coffee if you are lucky. In our nearest small town, Sauveterre-de-Guyenne there are 2 restaurants & a snack/cake place, kebab & chip place from a van on the main road-shut Mondays! Nothing particularly weird or unrecognisable & if you don't know 'qu'est ce que c'est'-what's that, will get a friendly reply. Larger towns provide more choice of course. Beware the steak is good advice-tends to be tough unless you know where to buy, as we do-our local place le Caumontoiserie sells Limousin steak from a farm nearby & that's great.
We love it here, as you may have gathered, although a little concerned about the Brexshite shenanigans & maybe having to get a carte-de-séjour, a kind of residence permit. Enjoy!

I find the price of beer offensive in Italian restaurants.

A pint of beer costs more than a pizza.

I might complain to the Pope about it.

Serves you right! Red wine with pizza :D
