Hi all,
Hope you've all had a great weekend away in your MH ,
We've just had our second trip away to Canterbury this weekend. Another great site close to city centre , very friendly and excellent bus service just outside campsite. Anyway we have been writing the mileage down when we've filled up and have worked out we are getting 22 miles to the gallon, is this what you would expect from a 7.5 meter, 2.8 Ducato TD ?

I am in the fill it, use it, fill it some more, use it some more, school.
Tend to drive a bit too fast, with the cruise set at 65, but after a few hours on the road, it all settles down a bit.

20 mpg
4250kg A Class Mercedes
I keep to the speed limit on 'normal roads' and do 75mph using cruise control on the motorway.

I have never achieved 30 mpg in our current 2006, 2.8 Fiat, 3.9 tonne A class, and I do try my best. I rarely exceed 60 mph and usually aim for around 55 with steady acceleration and braking and good anticipation. Best ever was 27 mpg using high grade diesel, generally I get 25. With our previous low profile, newer, 2.3 Fiat I used to get around 32mpg and with our first van, an overcab with the same 2.8 engine, anything between 22 and 25 was the norm. Motorhomes are not built for speed and cornering ability, and it often surprises me to see some booting it down the motorway at speeds clearly in excess of 70 mph, just because they can. Cherbourg to central Portugal on a wiggle road around about 1200 miles. Averaged out at about 10.5 mpg. 6.8v 10 petrol with the trailer/car. Always seems to be around the 10 mark, with or without the trailer.
Last time we drove down, 5years ago it cost around £700 this time spent about £500 so I'm a happy chappy.

Over the last 4 1/2 years we have managed an average of 25/26 mpg in our Avondale 2.8 L JTD with over cab. We take delivery of a a slightly larger Pilote low profile, 2.3 L multijet in March and the fuel consumption comparison should be interesting. Certainly can't wait to start the comparison. (8 long weeks now without a van, only 12 even longer weeks to go now)

Hymer B584 2005 2.8JTD with Smart on a trailer. Two years overall 23.2 mpg. I use cruise control set to (a satnav) 65mph on motorways. Given the garden shed aerodynamics I suspect that is a reasonable result.

Low profile Bessacarr 3.5 t on 2008 2.3 Ducato as daily driver, full timing and hilly West Wales based when not away travellin' as we frequently are: av approx 30mpg with a best of a consistent 38.2 on Liege and Brussels ring roads whilst avoiding the crater-like potholes travelling ata steady 55-58 mph. Worst would be 24 ish on the back lanes of Carmarthenshire, usually in the rain...... However, today we move into our new home, a 1999 Hymer Starline with the much acclaimed pre cdi 2.9 5 pot lump mate to a manual box, my kind of set up! Truck like to drive, unlike the car like 2008 Ducato! So will have to begin again with the mpg bit - different driving style with different lpg figures. Why? Because I love older Mercs and especially Hymers, and vehicles which you have to work at driving as opposed to them driving you...... Keep on truckin' with Toby Trux.

Hymer B564 with Fiat 2.8 JTD, Im getting 21mpg but I'm going as fast as I can!! averaging between 70-80 on motorways. Id rather pay more in fuel and get where I'm going, besides, if I'm spending thousands on a wagon, the full is a moot point tbh

"You pays your money and you takes your choice " I suppose, but when we did Spain, Morocco and France we covered 6000 miles. At 27mpg that amounts to 222 gallons of diesel. At 21mpg it would have been 285 gallons. 63 gallons, even at today's low prices, pays for an awful lot of wine, or the cost of a one way ticket to Santander.

Once I am away in the van, I am where I'm going...

I did notice that on my trip to the South of France earlier this year fuel economy started around 27mpg and rose to 33mpg after three or four weeks as the "did you see that?" speeds gave way to "look at that!"

(24 year old Hymer on 2.5 Ducato)

And there's the difference! It's all about how we each choose to use the moho, and that may just be a free choice or it may depend on so many things, such as how much time we have available due to other commitments, or how conditioned we are by work to get things done asap.
As I prefer to be "on the way" rather than "having arrived", I consider myself lucky that we rarely have any commitments, so we can choose whether to "get there in the van" or to "be there in the van". :xsmile:

Fair points by all. At the moment, I'm using the MH for living in during the week as I work away. Hence the no care about fuel

When we are away in the summer etc, then I will be a lot more relaxed with my right foot!!!

Called at Sainsbury's to fill the car up today and I had a voucher for 8p off per litre, which was wonderful as it meant I got the diesel for 91.9p per litre! Can't remember how long it is since that was the real price. I know this is sod-all to do with MPG but the cheaper it gets, the less we worry about mpg.

We're getting 33-35mpg in our Transit (La Strada Pronto) PCV cruising at 65-70mph so pretty chuffed with that.

I am getting 16 mpg on a merc vario 4.25 litre engine on my 7.5 ton Clou which I'm pretty happy with.
