What am I entitled to claim for ?

No I’m not American, and have been told that most could be claimed if I wanted to take out a private case against the driver but no way will I consider that. One thing I did discover is the legal person I spoke with does not know the Highway Code as he was saying my motorhome can still be driven on the road so I could of used it on our Scottish trip. I explained to him that it was missing the drivers side mirror therefore was not road legal and a mail recommending that I do not attempt a temporary fix as then there would more damage to repair. According to my policy if I am totally blameless I am entitled to a suitable replacement vehical for any planned trips so hopefully will be getting away next week fingers crossed.

My last two accidents were no fault and other drivers fully admitted liability, their insurance companies rang me before I had even told mine to arrange everything and avoid third party intervention

I would want to be very sure the other party intend to pay for the repairs before chasing for the rest

Can we see a photo of the damaged mirror, I presume your insurance company will have seen that before suggesting refitting it , there might be options other than hiring

Just one thing people may wish to consider is have a account that is just for accidents put in a few £k for that rainy day so instead of claiming on the insurance and having the resultant insurance premium go up there is some cash there to fix the issue. I’m not saying this is right but is one way we are looking at negating high premiums once our 5 year penalty payments for making a claim is done (yes ours was no fault as well, but unless your insurance company can fully reclaim their costs your premium will go up).

Hi Coolcats, yes it’s a good idea but just a simple bump can be very expensive. The worst part about ours is the damage to the wing mirror and the actual fixing point on the body add in a new wheel arch, rub down, fill and spray the front plastic panel, new side indicator and mirror guard your looking at just under £4K. The lady did want to pay cash for the mirror until I told her the cost. At the end of the day nobody was hurt and really that is all that’s important.

Id ask the insurance company to approve a garage quote for a temporary fix. If you're worried about there then being more dammage to repair it's then clear they've approved it.

And we wonder why are insurance policies are so high

Do you want someone to wipe your bottom to!

Have a chat with a firm of loss assessors, they’re normally pretty good at sorting this sort of stuff out, even getting your own insurers to cough up more. In the past I’ve used loss assessors to good effect and also just using my own solicitor to sue for the consequential losses, but only if he can make his fees out of any award (y)

Wow just under 4 grand for that repair, that’s the problem when firms know it’s an insurance claim, they add loads of noughts to the price.
I’m not surprised she didn’t want to pay when she heard the amount.

I reversed in someone a few years ago coming out of our drive, said it’s my fault straight away, knocked on next door to tell them what happened, it was their friend visiting.
A slight dent in drivers door of a knackered old Audi, there was loads of other damage on it from previous scrapes etc.

Gave him my insurance details, reported it myself. Over 6 months later after hearing nothing he knocked on the door asking for £1000 in cash, I told him very very politely where to stick his request and he went.
