Welsh tourist tax

Where tourist taxes are implemented elsewhere in Europe I believe other levels of taxation such as VAT are at lower rates than the UK?

But significantly, if a tourist tax is being implemented, will the funds created be ringfenced to improved tourist related experience. If so OK, if not it's poor practice and detrimental. Similarly if tourism tax is applied it shouldn't be detrimental to government/local government funding for tourism/leisure related expenditure that already occurs. It must be additional funding that creates additional expenditure benefits.

We need the borders to be reintroduced.
When the kids were young teenagers we drove into Wales and they asked don't we need our passports.

By contrast when I was a teenager we never considered it as a seperate country.

Went to Wales 3 years ago it's getting Motorhome unfriendly like England so won't be going back.

We used to have to pay to get into Wales via the M4/M48 bridges over the Severn. Perhaps this is a similarly inept implementation of the deterrent to engage with leek lovers :wondering:

Not helping Wales tourism in the long term remaisn to be seen, my friends who have hospitality businesses arent keen on it
Will take a mental note. If, heaven forbid, I ever find myself homeless, I'll move over the border and sleep in doorways in England, it will be cheaper. Would hate to be sent to jail for unpaid taxes :whistle2:
may aswell, half that live near the border use Englnads hospitals :)

There's echoes of the old "they need us more than we need them" argument on this thread and we know how that worked out . . . . Good riddance to the "I'll never darken their doors again" brigade and good luck to the Welsh tourist industry. I know which one I'm backing.

Unfortunately it’s difficult to argue that the plans are working. We’ve had similar spats on here about other changes, 20mph, renaming places, road signs etc and someone always says ‘don’t come then’. The problem is that more people are obviously taking that to heart and not going to Wales, which is helping no-one. There are so many choices of destination a tourist can make these days and small changes can lead to countries just being written off the ‘let’s visit’ list. What’s being done to promote Wales? I don’t recall seeing anything.

Although hopefully we have now sold our guest house, I wasn’t looking forwards to another unpaid tax collector task. I’ve not yet seen any information on how the tax is to be collected or how much information has to be recorded and submitted to the government to prove the correct amounts have been collected and paid.
Especially in the early days, what will happen if customers refuse to pay the tax? On pre booked stays does the customer have to pay the extra at check in or the business pays?
Lots of details to be worked out and hassle which won’t impact any politicians who will just claim a successful implementation and point to the money raised.

I’d like to think the Welsh government will develop an online system to make handling the tax as simple as possible for all affected businesses large or small!

Oi !

That’s “leekist” that is !

The thought Police will soon be knocking on your door…….

…….and will probably have Welsh accents.

Just sold up our holiday lets in Pembrokeshire because of the way the tourist industry is being treated and taxed unfairly.
We used to make decent money but had to work long hours. The problem now is that there is very little profit to be made.
Anyway, interesting to read as we sit here retired with our feet up.

I am unsure what the Westminster Parliament, when it passed the legislation establishing the Devolved Assembly, gave the Assembly powers to do in respect of taxes.

If it is only empowered to tax residents of the Principality, which I would expect to be a limitation of the Assembly's tax raising power, then I cannot see that it has power to tax anyone not resident there. If that is so then a visitor could refuse to pay the tax - just give the hotel or B&B cash to settle the room rate.

Thar might leave the establishment with a liability for the tax for a non-resident's stay but that would be a Welsh problem.

Further problem, is a Welsh person resident in Cardiff going to be liable for the tax when staying in Borth?

I think that when Qs like these start being raised there might be a re-think.

If its anything like other areas that have implemented it, it shows on all invoices as a seperate tax code. Easy enough accounted for.

this is a good example of why its not good practice for the government to dump the responsibility for collecting the tax onto the businesses. I wouldnt want the debate with someone check in to say pay up the tourist tax or you can't stay. Worse would be handling exceptions ("I'm here for work", "I'm Welsh" etc etc). Thats a great way to make the check in of a guest a bad experience!
No doubt once the tax has been established for a good while, people will become (reluctantly) accepting of the need to pay it.

More chance of peeing against the wind and not getting wet 😊

How would a non VAT registered cl/cs charge the VAT?
I'd charge you it & keep it all for myself(y)
Haven’t been to Wales for over 50 years.
You left off "thank God"😆
That would be like blaming the people of the Uk f
they are to blame ,they didn't vote.If ALL the people did you wouldn't be in this boat
I never knew I was diverse
No, it is 'Dai Verse' something to do with the Eisteddford:laughing:

No it would leave any sensible owner with cash & " accommodation that was never used"
it shows on all invoices as a seperate tax code.
& if it was on one of my invoices it would clearly state "Tourist tax by the scamming Welsh Parliament" in block capitals,as would forwarding of any amount paid to the scum.
accepting of the need to pay it.
Why? "Accepting " ? " need" ?? there is no "need" they are just profligate, wasteful, pie in the sky spendthrift scum. Nothing whatsoever will be seen to be done with any income except to be wasted on earnings, expenses & freebies for even more of the t+++s.

Eh?

So if I go to Venice, I don't have to pay the tourist tax because I'm not Italian?

So it's called a 'tourist tax' - but not everyone who stays in a hotel (or campsite for that matter) is a tourist. What about business travel.

And if it happens in Wales it's possibly even more likely to happen in other UK countries too.

There’s your answer. Salaries and Pensions. Now there’s a surprise.
You mean people should work for nothing and retire without a pension. My goodness how progressive….

Why not reckon you could charge £5 a night in Essex and £10 per night in London

I do not know about Italy but I was questioning whether the powers devolved to the Welsh Assembly included the power to levy tax on people who do not live in Wales. I am sure the Assembly cannot levy a tax on a Welshman who lives in Leeds.

I don’t agree with this tax however; The Welsh assembly has limited tax raising powers that are legal within Wales, so are at liberty to decide who this tax affects within Wales.
And if passed local authorities will be able to decide if they wish to implement the tax or not.
if the LA adopts the collection of the tax then payment will not be optional for anyone.

If you fall into the group that are required to pay it will matter not where you come from, ( that includes Welsh residents) it would be an offence to refuse and not to pay.

It will be the same as in any country that has this tax, you don’t have a choice ( other than not to put yourself in a position where the tax is payable).

Seems a good idea to me, 75p ph won’t put anyone off who isn’t already put off by the price in this country. It works well in Europe, and not all campsites are cheap there either. The rest of the country should do it.
