Well, Oban's not what I thought...

For anyone tempted to go to Mull in early October, I’d say don’t, unless you are a motorsport enthusiast. Mull Rally is held early October and the rally effectively takes over the island, both for the rally dates and the week before. Accommodation will be booked up, sites full, and roads busy. In the lead-up crews recce the route, often at night. Then during the rally there are road closures, both during the day and at night.

If you are a motorsport enthusiast, it’s a great atmosphere

I quite liked Oban, but then I love Scotland. It would take a lot to make me bad mouth anything north of Carlisle.

The entire coastline and mountains that way are stunning. Oban is on the left under the cloud.

I might be wrong, but I seem to recall there being one or more palm trees on the way into Oban. Not exactly a common sight in the UK.

When I was last there in 2008 is seemed quite run down compared to how I’d remembered it from the 70’s. I’m planning to take another look later this year for further comparison. Oban was once on my list of places to retire to.
