Hi All,

This is my second question for the day so hopefully we can get some solutions to lack of a spare wheel.
Our MH is restricted to 3500 because we are around 70 and dont want to do the bi annual tests etc. Because we like to take our two bikes with us we will find it hard to fit a spare wheel and meet the weight restriction. I've read on here that some people just carry a spare wheel but surely they will have to drive to a garage to get it fitted and wouldn't most tyre garages carry tyres for Mhomes. One idea I had was to carry a can of aero spray weld and use that if we get a punture. I see Halfords sell Holts tyre weld which can only be used on tyres of 17in...... so not suitable for our MH.
If I could find a spray that is suitable for our tyres then this would be a suitable remedy for a lack of a spare wheel. Has anyone tried this and does it work?
Thanks
Tony

Hi All,
I didn't expect so many replies with good advice and stories.
I'm now able to form an opinion of which way to progress so thankyou all very much.
I'm not keen to upgrade the chassis weight because of the 'fuss and expense' of getting certified to drive by doctors and the DVLA and I also think it will be good to keep the weight down because it would only encourage Marian to jam more stuff into the gunnels. But hopefully it will allow us to take bikes but not bothered if this cant be done, our legs are just about still working. Also the thought and fuss of fitting underbody or rear mounted tyre mounts is not making that option viable.
In conclusion I think I will get the 'oko' tyre infill treatment done and also back this up with tyre pressure monitors which seem well priced.
Thanks again for the great help.
Tony Y Marian

Ps TheonlySue, I've just seen your note about weighbridges and that's my next port of call as it will confirm how many kgs's we have to play with and also to ascertain the correct tyre pressures

Hi Liz and Tim, I had read that somewhere but will speak with OKO first. If it cant be done, we'll just use the tyre pressure monitoring system. Thanks for the reminder though.

Sorry but I just don't get it .if you are in the Pyrenees with a flat and no phone signal I'd rather have a spare and a jack than a garage full of junk

Tony, Not clear on your age or on your state of health.
I am almost at 70 and MH is 4200kgs so I needed to keep C1.
You suggest "fuss and expense" but if you are not in poor health it is straightforward.
I used a D4 Doctor on a Saturday morning, took 15 minutes and cost £50
She provided D4 form and filled in her bit having checked my eyesight and blood pressure.
I completed the 2 easy to fill in forms and licence back a week later.
Licensed now for C1 for 3 years.

I accept some people are not as fortunate as me but I have ample payload and have a spare wheel (y).
I run full tank of diesel, water and junk, worrying is not acceptable at my age.

I think calling them bi-annual tests may be overstating things. All you need do is get a doctor to ask you a series of medical questions, a few checks and then an eye test. You need to that every three years.

I'll second that. My medical, a fortnight ago, took less than 15 minutes and cost £48. I had the eyesight section of the medical at the same time as my routine eye test about a month ago. License arrived within a week, I was 70 on the 15th of this month, and collected my upsized van (5.4t) on the 16th. So far so good (y):D.

Can I ask who you used for the medical?

There are also a couple of others you can try. D4Drivers, they are £50.00 and have doctors available even at weekends to suit you. (last year Sunday (my preference)) and on 3/3/18 on Saturday. There are also doctors on wheels, I think at £51.00.

Good morning and thanks for all the new replies. I rang OKO this morning and they comfirmed their valve injection is not compatable with tyre pressure monitoring systems so thanks to Liz and Tim for that alert. I hear what people are saying about getting the medical, I'm nearly 69 and Marion is just over seventy and in good health touch wood so getting a C1 shouldn't be a problem. What I will probably do first is get the weighbridge information and then see how we get on in our first trip out at the Hope Valley which we plan to do in a few weeks time. After that we should be able to see the way ahead.
Thanks again for all the inputs and hope to see some of you on the road soon.

Tyreweld can and does work but NOT if your tyre looks like this.

You don't have to go to the pyrenees for no signal I can go up the road & not have one. Plenty of places here with no coverage.
