Get into a routine of giving the cassette a good clean out when you return from wherever it is you have gone. It doesn't take long, it's good practise, it's hygenic and can also stop problems later down the road.
Whenever we get back from a trip, doesn't matter if it's one night or one month, the routine when we get home is the same :

-Empty cassette if it isn't already empty
-Rinse thoroughly with clean water until the water looks clear when you empty it
-Couple of caps of general purpose disinfectant and fill about 1/4 full with warm water
-Give it a good shake up and leave for 10 or so minutes
-Another good shake and empty
-Same again, but with a bit more disinfectant and fill to the brim (i do this in our downstairs shower cubicle)
-Leave overnight
-Shakey shakey and empty again
-Rinse with clean water until there are no bubbles from the disinfectant
-Give the blade and seal a quick squirt of silicone spray
-Leave it somewhere to dry and then store until required again.

You could always brew your own ecologically friendly version as per this recipe from the USA:

Take the mechanism out and Give the tank a thorough clean with hot beachy water, put silicone grease on the mechanism slider rail and reassemble.

Fill it with very hot water & some biological washing powder & leave to soak. It should really be cleaned like this (or with another type of cleaner - not bleach/Milton as that will damage seals), after every trip. The front does open (see utube video about how to do it) to be able to get your hand inside to give it a really really good clean. After cleaning use silicone spray on the seals. Our cassette is 11 years old & still immaculate..thorough cleaning is everything.

You are all cleaning the cassette like mad. I always recharge the cassette ready for use again and it never ever smells.

Check the cavity in which the cassette goes and give that a good clean periodically as that can be the cause of issues if your seal is no longer perfect or you overfill the cassette!

I had problems with my cavity when I changed my cassette for one with wheels.

Apparently they can be slightly shallower and the seal doesn’t quite sit right.

A shim of plastic under the cassette raises it up to the correct height and prevents leakage.

It’s amazing how much pee can collect before you notice! 😜

I'm possibly overdoing it I freely admit. However it really doesn't bother me in the slightest and I enjoy the fact that it's being well cared for and kept in as pristine condition that a small box that holds wee and poo can be! And that was on my 20 year old van, God only knows how anal (pun intended!) I'm going to be when we pick up our new one!!!

In that case, kitty litter is your best friend, Soaks up liquid spills instantly and deodorises. Much easier to clean out than soaking up the liquid with a sponge
