We have a tame Pheasant

Can I gazump you? They aren’t in my garden tho!
We stay, very regularly, on a certain CS, and I ‘bumped into’ the three Barn Owl youngsters this morning, didn’t expect to see them as it was full blazing sun at 7.40am. They dropped out of the trees and flew away in front of me one going into one Barn Owl box and one into the Tawny box, the third into a tree-he disturbed the Buzzard that few out, then the Barn went back up the field and into the second Barn Owl box!
Quite a show for me and Pippa!

I am currently on a CL and the farmer has said I can take as many pheasants as I want, They are causing problems and every time the yuppies come out for a shoot he gets loads just dumped over his gate. His Mrs does not eat pheasant.

Long time since we had a brace of pheasants hung by the back door. Another thing you rarely see in the modern world. Most kids think all meat comes from Tesco in plastic packaging

We also have a male pheasant who has been around for several years and is known as "Mad". He has no fear of humans at all and has been known to go through open doors into houses. Last year he had two ladies in his harem but this year I have only seen one.

Been a while since I had rabbit ..... when we get home I will have to ask our local rabbit snare expert to set a few as we are over run again. Sorry to upset the animal lovers but the rabbits eat the greens down to nothing and then they starve as well :(

Just shows that old uns cannot pull as many birds.

We often get a pheasant in the garden. One male was particularly vicious - used to terrorise/attack us as we went from the car to the house. Particularly territorial during the breeding season I was advised.

One year we had this chap at the bird feeder. A Reeve’s pheasant. Tradition dictates they (and albinos) are not shot, so I’m told . . .

Let me introduce you to ‘Buster’, my 2hh racing pheasant (male 2yr old class) during one of his regular training runs in preparation for the annual Trill Gold Cup meeting.

Seriously though, without fail this guy would hear my quad approaching and run along the hedgerow to ‘chaperone’ me around the land while I was checking things over for about 45 minutes, before escorting me off of his patch as in the video.

This went on for four years until last November when I saw him for the last time hobbling with a damaged leg. The land was remote from the main farm and there were no shoots in the vicinity, so he had a good life. And I never fed him, just had a chat when we met up.

Brilliant 👍

BTW Buster told me that it had been remarked upon that he was in fact 3hh and not 2hh. Apparently that was a nasty rumour put about by the Pigeon Fanciers Club and wasn’t true - how can you trust them about anything when they complete half their racing distance on the back of a lorry? On the other hand, members of the Pheasant Racing fraternity are of course by nature far more sophisticated and understated than those close cousins to flying rats. (So he said!).

We named our tam pheasant boris he used to come in doors if we didn’t get the seed out quick enough. He responded to boc boc if we saw him in the garden he would come running up to get fed, he sometimes brought his harem to visit.

Update time ;) we haven't seen our "tame pheasant" for a couple of months or more then a few weeks ago she turns up with 5 children in tow and reckons it's now our responsibility to feed then;) typical we were only being friendly and now look what we are lumbered with, couldn't get the whole brood together but just counted and there are still 5.

To be honest it could be a completely different pheasant as they all look the same to me  oh they like apples(y)

They look nice and healthy, a good clean water source is just as important as food

You have it all - that garden, Morelo Palace and now 6 pheasants. :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

We are (not) jealous.

Geoff and Basia.

Oh there are more than 6 Geoff ;) that's just the one family.

A farmer friend has offered me as many pheasants as I want. All having been shot by paying customers who will not eat their kiĺl.

We are still trying to fatten up these Pheasants in time for Christmas,

They help themselves to what the little birds chuck out of the feeder, fussy buggers at £32 a bag and they chuck half on the floor, so Jen put some on lawn to get a better photo and next minute a little hedgehog comes brushing past my feet heading for the Sunflower hearts on the lawn,

IMG_0106.jpeg

A quick Google and guess what they shouldn't have peanuts or sunflower seeds, so I gave him an apple as we are overrun with them then went inside for my camera,

when I got back Jen said he had a sniff of the apple and walked away most likely looking for sunflower hearts that the LBJ have discarded, the wildlife around here ain't half picky.
