'er indoors has had some major surgery which I don't need to go into here and as a result is now immune suppressed which means amongst other things that we need to be careful with our drinking water from now on.

I refuse to be someone who carriers separate bottled water for drinking when we have a perfectly good tank onboard so I think a fitted filter system is going to be the answer.

I'm aware of the issues with Nature Pure/General Ecology so one of their systems is not an option.

I know people have found alternatives but I can't remember what they are. (3M?)

Also I'd prefer one that covers the whole water system rather than just a single tap if such a thing exists.
 
I have a Berkey water purifier which I use for drinking water and cooking.

But then I don't need to have pure water for my showering and washing up... I am a rufty tufty, full time OSM (and sometime FLT). :whistle:

I cant help with the water system as I am one of the wimps that carry drinking water in bottles

Nick is it maybe this filter . Claims to filter to 0.2 micron .... Fair bit of detail on the link .

Yes, it is the 3M filter that has been fitted by others who previously relied on the Nature Pure.

The following link was posted by a fellow Funster just the other week but you will need to purchase the AP3 filter head separately (y)

Nick, if it's only drinking water we use a Brita jug. I have had whole house carbon filters on my boats and the RV but they are a reasonable size and to be inline was an issue on the Flair. So we went for Brita as a stop gap whilst I found a solution. That was 3 years ago and the Brita is part of our life. Unbranded carbon filters at Asda are much cheaper. In theory last 4 weeks but we have gone 6 and only change because Sally wants to.
 
Very few (and definitely not activated charcoal) filters remove pathogens. You'll need to be very specific when outlining your requirements.

Why take the risk with your dearest, get the bottled water and you know she’s safe from any contaminate.

We use the 3m filter - it’s a great piece of kit and the water flow rate is excellent.
I’d suggest also investing in the bypass plug which allow the system to run without a filter being fitted.
I’d also suggest getting a second filter just in case the first one gets blocked up.

Hi Nick. :) Sorry to hear of your wife now finding herself immune suppressed. :(
Rita unfortunately is also immune suppressed, due to the medication she needs to inject with (weekly now), as a result of major surgery.

The issue you refer to regarding Nature Pure, was only an issue whilst that idiot Harold (UK Distributing Agent) was switching bacterial filters for limescale reduction filters, before selling folks the kit. :mad:
That problem/issue no longer exists, and those of us (hundreds now) who were compensated and given the correct bacterial filters, are extremely happy with them. I'm sure @Jim wouldn't still be using the system, knowing what he knows, if he wasn't confident that the issue had been correctly resolved.

I appreciate that you have probably made your decision by now, however, the Nature Pure is still very much a quality product.

I need to look at getting a filter. Before we left on the current jaunt I cleaned out the gauze filter on the inlet to the water pump. Eight weeks later it looked like this:

I think what happened was I also filled the tank with water and chucked in a few sterilising tablets before we left. The mix was then shaken about for a day on the ferry to Santander on a rough crossing and what is seen in the image above is gunk from the inside of the water tank I think. It is possible it came from a tap somewhere when we refilled but I don't think so though you can never fully trust supplies - we had leaves in the water on one place in France. :)

I've drained and flushed the tank and added more sterilising tablets and when we get back home in a few weeks I'll repeat the draining/flushing/sterilising cycle a few times until nothing comes out.

And I must be more prompt draining the tank after we return from trips as I suspect that is how the gunge built up.

Because a) having a 120l water tank and still carrying 5l bottles of water to drink is absurd and b) the idea that bottled water is somehow cleaner or fresher than tap water doesn’t stand up.

Obviously your choice, however never personally had any problems with bottled water and as far as am aware no supplier has been sued/prosecuted for supplying contaminated water (apart from Del & Rodney).
Never said bottled water was cleaner/fresher than tap water but I would say it’s a lot cleaner than water sat in a plastic tank in hot weather for a number days.

I have a filter in the Motorhome, it is the same as the one we use at home. I replace it approx every 3 to 6 months (at home) every "season" in the Van. It`s primary purpose is removal of Limescale and chlorine for drinking which reduces the number of times we have to de-scale the kettle by a vast margin. So in the `van it makes the Heater work less hard. I installed it (`van) after a Multiple De-Scale session using Citric Acid. The water does appear to be "fresher" too. I make no claims that this will reduce bacteria. For that the only real cure is a reverse osmosis system (bloody expensive) and or the use of high levels of chlorine. If chlorine is used, one way of ridding it is to put a jug of the water in the refrigerator for an hour or so.

Many years ago, we used chlorine to make water "potable" for drinking on board ships, especially when we bunkered it from doubtful sources. Later on, we made our own from seawater using flash distillation, but because it was low temperature vacuum distillation it still needed treatment to make "potable". On one ship I could make 4tonne a day, just using the main engine cooling system as the heat source.
