I have recently had a Pioneer 950 Dab radio fitted to my Swift Bessacarr Ducato based MH 2020 . When I picked it up from the shop (Halfords) I noticed that the mileage indicator was flashing. After speaking to the guy that fitted the system he informed me that it has a Canbus system and that some can have issues. My options are I can either, 1. put up with it flashing, 2. Take it to the dealers and see if they can sort it out or 3. Take the system back out and put it back to the factory radio system.

Has anyone any advise on this matter? I like the new system and was hoping to get it rectified!!!

TA Steve

My personal view is that Halfords fitted it and Halfords needs to rectify the problem as their fitting of the radio has caused the problem.
I had a similar problem when I fitted my Andriod head unit in our van when I tried to get the steering wheel radio controls to work as I had connected to the wrong CanBus line, if I remember correctly, I had connected to the high line rather than the CanBus low line.

Take it you had the original Fiat headunit removed to fit a Pioneer? If so the vehicle then needs to know the original Fiat head unit is no longer part of the system so as above it needs proxi aligned to stop the speedo flashing but would have thought that Halfords have come across this many times.

I had a similar situation after i replaced the ECU for the airbag. However after driving about 20 miles it stopped flashing and has been OK ever since.

Halford gave us great advice on fitting a car seat . 4 different vehicles and the o e I wanted even though more expensive the young man deemed unsuitable.

Sadly I wouldn't ask them to change a bulb as the standard of training and knowledge in many areas is shocked bad

Also if your Pioneer is a double din unit it is wise to fit a cut off switch inline with the main power feed. When you turn them off on the unit they go into standby mode (which draws a lot of current) and can flatten a battery overnight.

It's a known problem I had new stereo but they didn't link to steering controls and it all worked well and no lights, however I wanted steering wheel controls so with the help of the stereo manufacturer I programmed the unit for wheel controls which worked well however now I had flashing mileage which was ok for MOT so I lived with it. If you Google it it is a known problem.

You need a programme to interface via the OBD port to edit the CANBUS and do what is called a proxy realignment. Multiecuscan can do this but many normal users are scared to do it. Any good auto electrician will be able to carry the work out and also fit a switched supply to the head unit to stop it flattening the battery when parked up

Thanks for all the replies guy's I have had a word with the guy from Halfords and told him that the MH is in storage and that it will be after Xmas until I get back to it. They said they would extend the 30 day return policy.
I will speak to a local garage / electrician for prices before I get back to them and see where we go from here.

Thanks again .... Steve (y)

I can’t help with the Fiat cum radio issues but our daughters mini failed it’s MOT for headlight alignment being incorrect. When she brought it home for me to sort out the headlight was held in by a cable tie on one side were the adjuster bracket on the light was broken. She told me she was stopped by the police for having one headlight not working and took it to Halfords because I was away and our local garage was closed.
Halfords did pay for a new headlight but it took a lot of phone calls before they agreed that the fault was there doing.

Sorry the the rare good ones, but I wouldn't trust a Halfords yooof to fit anything on my vehicle. I wouldn't trust them to sweep the floor effectively, let alone mess with the electrics on an expensive motorhome. The only training some have had is watching a mate fit a bigger stereo in their corsa that makes the windows shake

I have just fitted a Kenwood DABs radio with Android Auto. The mileage was flashing also. It is corrected in the Connect2 interface on screen display, by setting to Option 2 for mileage display. Unfortunately it appears (certainly in my case) that the CAN bus connections need this interface to work correctly, and they ain't cheap either. Its a bit of a minefield. It controls radio screen to dash info and steering wheel to radio controls.
This is on a 2021 Fiat Ducato Maxi chassis.

UPDATE!

After using my MH over the Xmas holidays I have noticed a few issues apart from the mileage flashing.

The unit will not work unless the ignition is switched on which in turn does not allow us to use it unless the key is in the ignition.
Also trying to get a signal to use the DAB facility is non existent unless in or around a town center.

I am awaiting a reply from the guy at Halfords who fitted it.

Problem after problem with this unit. You would think spending over £600.00 it would work trouble free!

May get them to remove it and put factory one back and get refunded???

I've just experienced (and fixed) exactly the same issue on my Fiat 500 toad. I installed a Fiat DAB unit & the odometer started flashing. I fixed it with MultiECU Scan. No alignment sequence needed. A section of the ME Scan software had an options box for DAB which needed changing from "NO" to "YES". Job done.

Several issue's here:-
firstly it's been incorrectly wired - fitter hasn't/cannot follow simple fitting instructions contained in the fitting instructions

secondly DAB, common problem with pioneer units - we ended up connecting to tv aerial booster (dedicated radio terminal, better, but not perfect)

thirdly, flashing speedo, in the instructions there is a piece bout VP1 & VP2 units - try switching this wiring to the other option, cured our Pioneer AVIC unit.

Hope this is of some help.

Couldn’t agree more! My Pioneer unit never stopped drawing power… it was more like a heat sink than a head unit!

As I have earlier posted,I had to buy the Connect2 kit to stop the mileage flashing. I did take it to a Peugeot van main dealer for a service and to check this flashing mileage. That cost me £99 and the advice "it was the radio causing the problem", really!!? Buy the kit and that will fix it. I also endorse the comments about fitting an isolation switch to the radio power lead, but that was because I used a permanent 12v supply from the hab battery. I have now fitted an Android based radio because of the awful not to mention the expensive sat nav Naviextras used by Pioneer. I now use the Tom Tom app. which at £19.99 per annum is a steal especially with regular map updates/speed camera at no extra costs. A no brainer really!!

I had a Kenwood unit installed, including the Connect 2 kit to link up steering wheel buttons etc, but also had flashing mileage. Took it back to the installer (specialist car audio place) and they fixed it. He said he got some advice from Connect 2 supplier on how to do it. Now however Ive noticed another minor problem, there were some functions on the old Fiat Ducati head unit which changed things like the van clock etc. There is nowhere else to do it except through the old head unit. Im told there is another kit to allow this?
