MH
dont own yet
Hi there
So Pleased to be a part of this group! Very wary of keyboard warriors as been bullied on Facebook in the past so please please be kind 😬❤️
This is going to sound very extreme but I’m looking at purchasing my first mh to live in
I’ve owned a touring caravan and loved it
I will be selling my home and cars and just going for it
Any help advice ideas on how I start and good or bad ideas?!

1. Join the site (ie pay your fees so you can post more than 5 times).
2. Describe what you think you need the van to do (short trips, 100% off grid, on sites, over landing etc etc)
3. Enjoy the research phase!

No keyboard warriors or bully's on here, Jim has a special way of dealing with 'em

Lots to consider if full timing like insurance and being aware of payload to kick things off.
Good luck with your search, there'll be lots of useful advice on here.

Also worth paying to be a full member, it'll pay for itself many times over 👍

You will still need to be legal (insurance, road tax) and you cannot do that without a ‘regular’ address.

You can only stay on a campsite for 28 days at a time and constantly moving gets old and tiring. A friend of mine did this in a caravan for nearly 7 years and it almost finished them off - after 3 years the novelty had well and truly worn off, after 5 they were desperate to move back into bricks & mortar but it took another two years and help from their family to be able to do so.

Don’t want to put you off, but ignore Instagram - it ain’t all bunting, fairy lights and watching the sun set at a beach.

I think a lot will depend on if your free to travel abroad or if you'll be limited to UK winters which I think could be cold wet and grim in a motorhome.
Also, don't underestimate the cost of campsite fees, if in the UK you'd almost certainly need electric hook up over winter, and free camping isn't easy especially for full timers. An odd night here or there is ok but you'd soon find yourself in conflict with locals if in the same free spot for weeks on end.

This is what I need to take into consideration but I do have my sons house to stay at over winter
I’m not wanting just to stay at campsites but where can you stay?
Sorry totally new to all this 🤦‍♀️

Are you going to be working or are you retired? It's a lot easier if you are not working as you will never be away from the van for too long. I'm currently living in mine fulltime and working away but wary of leaving the van all day in the places where I would park for free. That means I am having to pay site fees for now.

Thats useful, you can probably use his address for correspondence etc.
You can use the apps to find parkups, search for sites and park 4 night etc but it might mean being constantly on the move ?

I thought I'd get bored of it after a couple months but I'm still in the van 4-5 years later. House prices don't exactly help in luring me back to bricks and mortar of course but....

Take your time in your purchase, you're going to be in this van constantly so it needs to be right.

I’ve just started reading Jim’s guide to buying a motorhome!!
I’ve always been an outdoor girl had horses livestock alpaca the lot! But lost my land 2 years ago and had to sell up
I am a driver for a living and have been for many years I never took to office work but I am a grafter and have always done what it takes to get by
I just want to see so much more of our country before it’s too late and too old to appreciate it

If it was me I'd hold fire on selling the house until you've tried it for a few months to be sure it suits you. Also, a house is an investment, a motorhome will devalue eventually.

Why not rent your house out and use that income to fund your van life?

That post worries me as I was going to suggest keeping the home and renting it for income.

So if not rental income where will your income come from? You are well off State Pension age. What are the 'finances' to which you refer?

Have you got a passport that allows you into Schengen for more than 90 in 100 days? It is easier and cheaper to live off-grid in Europe than UK.
