VW in need of a respray?

Seen in the pub car park yesterday at the Inn on the Shore in Downderry, Cornwall.

German registered and with a sign in the back window saying: Rain Wash Only

Is the appearance of the van a new ironic grunge fashion statement that's escaped me, or is it in need of a respray?

Your right, it's the Rat look, it's been on the VW scene for nearly 20yrs, not 2.

In, I think it was 2010, there was a couple of early beetles at the big annual Sandown Racecourse VW show entrance in this guise and they were priced at an absolute fortune!

Yes. It's often carefully created and preserved with lacquer.Saw a fantastic example at a local VW show yesterday.Wish I'd taken a picture.

There's no sign of crumbling wheel arches etc. so it has to be a deliberate cosmetic look. I suppose it serves as an anti-theft deterrent.

IMO rat look is terrible, I was on the scene for 30 years came out of it when the stuff started getting overpriced for rusty rubbish , at least the sale of my splitty payed for my Motorhome

It’s a wrap. If you look carefully you will see all the fittings are to clean indicators lights and even windscreen rubbers. To clean so a 100% wrap. I like it.
