VW Crafter
HI,
I am after a bit of guidance; I purchased a VW Crafter (converted Mini Bus), which on the V5, it states is a Motor Caravan; the taxation class is Diesel Car (under 35000kg). My question is, should it be taxed as a PLG, or is Dcar the right classification? (I am trying to save a bit of money on VED as I am currently just short of £700 before the pending rise). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The taxation class will never change by changing body style, the only way to do it is via the revenue weight tax brackets, in this case registering above 3500kg as a PHGV.

If you already have have a C1 category on your licence would it be possible to up plate the van to above 3500kg and get the taxation revenue class as PHGV at £165 per annum?

Some details on this recent thread:

Hi Guys,
Thx for the responses, i did look at uprating but not sure whether my van would be a so called paper exercise. I will make contact with these guys https://www.svtech.co.uk/, hopefully they can answer some questions. (y)(y)

If the V5 says Motor Caravan & it's 3500kg the Revenue class should be PLG which is £325, as said if you uprate it to over 3500kg it's only £165 and has not increased for over 20 years.

3490kg ? :)

3490kg is extremely low for an ex minibus I reckon.
Suppose it depends on the size/seats the bus was

There’s also VWE, which I’ve used and found very helpful and efficient.

Your vehicle could be registered in the M1SP ved class, and as such will be in a higher taxation class until it's 6th year

For instance, this 2020 registered Motorhome here is £180 per year, plus £390 for its first 5 years, and this M1SP class was applicable to minibuses with up to 9 seats

Thanks again for the responses; my van is a converted VW Crafter (58 plate ex Mbus); I have attached a copy of the specifications. Lenny HB, even if it is possible to get it registered as a PLG, that would be half the current VED revenue.(y)(y)

You cannot change the taxation class to anything other than PHGV, and only then by uprating the load capacity. There is NO other way.

It says Body type Motor Caravan, so the taxation class is wrong and it's 3500 kg so the taxation class should be PLGV & £325 per year.

It is not unusual for DVLA to make cock ups like this they appear to be unable to change more than one line on a V5.

A common mistake myself and others have had when uprating they change the Revenue weight but don't change the MAM.

You need to write to then make sure you copy any documents you send to them. They will probably respond saying it is correct, then you open a complaint it will then get sorted fairly quickly.

Once you have that sorted you could consider uprating it which would reduce the VED to £165 and give you a lot more payload.

Do not, whatever you do,lose the "body type" = motorcaravan as it is nigh on impossible to get these days.

How on earth are you paying nearly £700 ved for that then?

EDIT, I see, 255 g/km, on a 2008 diesel car.

Surely you can get that changed to plgv and get a refund for the over payments?

The vehicle category is M1, presumably because it was first registered as a passenger vehicle (i.e. minibus).

I understood that it was not possible to change? That they won't change it to N1? After all, it is still a passenger vehicle, not a goods vehicle.

Motor Caravan is M1SP, N1 is a bus or goods vehicle.

Thx again all,
Just to confirm (sorry I'm trying to get my head around all this technical jargon) that any vehicle that has a body type of Motor Caravan should be placed in either PLG (<3500) or PHGV class (>3500). Maybe as Lenny HB states maybe the change on the V5 was completed on a Friday and the robots clocked of midway through the change. I did try to contact DVLA today but apparently they were busy, I'll try again Monday.
