If I remember our first Cali had this problem, cant remember the detail but I did get it change after a couple of visits to the dvla. You are correct in saying that it is not a conversion it is factory built as a camper, this was our get out and the dvla accepted this and I reclassified along with a refund. It’s a whole new can of worms Minxy …… The VW California is recorded by DVLA as various types depending on the year of registration! Ours was registered in June 2020 when they (THEY!) Decided it was an MPV!
All of this when is is quite clear that it is a ‘motor caravan’ built from the ground up at the factory.
TBH life is too short for me to take on these battles (plenty have tried on the VW forum and as of yet no one has succeeded.
As shown below on DVLA's own website updated Aug 2020 the fact yours is registered as MPV should not matter. It’s a whole new can of worms @Minxy …… The VW California is recorded by DVLA as various types depending on the year of registration! Yes... a lot of confusion on this matter..It’s actually worse, DVLA won’t allow pop tops as Motorhomes. I don’t really mind but the £490 road tax…….. now that really hurts!
Our pop-top is shown as motor caravan on the V5. Maybe that’s because it was registered as such by Autosleeper from new. It’s actually worse, DVLA won’t allow pop tops as Motorhomes. I don’t really mind but the £490 road tax…….. now that really hurts!
Friends of mine have the same VW registered in the same year and some of them are MPV’s and some of them are Motor Caravans . VW provide DVLA with the vehicle details upon first reg……. It’s just plain weird! Our pop-top is shown as motor caravan on the V5. Maybe that’s because it was registered as such by Autosleeper from new.
Probably depends on the convertor.Friends of mine have the same VW registered in the same year and some of them are MPV’s and some of them are Motor Caravans . VW provide DVLA with the vehicle details upon first reg……. It’s just plain weird!
Don't worry we'll still wave to youSo then, I have posted elsewhere but since pampam asked what is it….. here it is

Now, the thing is, it’s not really a ‘Motorhome’ in the traditional sense…… but we do motor around in it and it is our home when we do so. Therefore maybe I’ve slinked back in under the radar? Thinking about it, our previous two vans were PVC’s so maybe I was being fraudulent all along!
I see people talking about downsizing, well I reckon we are the champions of downsizing! …….. 6m PVC down to 5.4m PVC…… then down to 4.9m campervan ……… surely it has to stop somewhere!
We love our little van (Vixen the Volkswagen) and look forward to taking her on many new adventures
