3 years 30,000 miles UK and Europe.. Campsites and off Grid.
Parked up in campsite south of Naples near the Amalfi Coast. A young lad (23) comes and sets up next to us - on his bike! We've driven from UK to Italy over a month. He's cycled from North Holland! Had a great chat in the camp restaurant over dinner.

He's asked if he can bring some meat to our BBQ for dinner tomorrow. The least we can do. He seems to have just been eating sweets and drinking coke. Just in awe!

Met a bloke in Croatia in his 50`s had split up with is wife and was cycling all around Europe started in the UK down to Spain across to Italy. Had his bike stolen in Italy and a UK Motorhomer gave him one of their bikes. We were just at a parking spot invited him in for a coffee.

I knew that chap he's flogged over 300 bikes on ebay after spinning that line😆😀

We met a Norwegian cyclist in Aksai Chin, the disputed border area claimed by India and China. He had cycled from Norway. He said that when he was stopped by guards they would put him and his bike in a truck and take him back down the road, fifty miles or so. He would then cycle forward again and try to pass the guards late at night in the dark. An amazing journey indeed.

I met a morrocan lad who now lived in Holland when I was in Portugal in 2018 , he had walked and hitchhiked through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and then Portugal, with just a small backpack and sleeping bag , he slept on the beaches or under trees , he'd taken 3 months doing it and spent less than €300 , I gave him a lift about 20 miles. I still get the odd WhatsApp from him .

We met a couple from Holland who were cycling around Morocco. They had already crossed the Atlas mountains. Any body who has been to Morocco will know how challenging that route is in a motorhome - some of the gradients are extremely steep and can rise or fall thousands of feet.

I know a guy in his 60’s who did similar.

Yet another Top Tumps thread!!:giggle:
Yeah, I met a guy in America once. He told me his life story of how he’d been in the Vietnam war and then came home and was awarded the MoH. He then bought a shrimp boat and made loads of money and invested it in a fruit company and just lives off the income from that.
I think he just mows grass now to pass the time.
Oh and he did say that he ran all over America for something to do.

Extraordinary chap.

We also met an Aussie couple on a campsite in Portugal who were amazed that there were no BBQs provided by the site. We let them use ours and they were very grateful.
All the Aussy campsites have kitchen and BBQ facilities for all to use. It works.

Ok, while we are on a game of top trumps....

Watched this whole series a couple of years ago during lockdown. It goes back to 2017. 19 year lad unicycles the whole world. No support, just him, a unicycle, a small tent etc. Amazing (mad) the way he would just find random places to camp overnight, out in the middle of nowhere in countries like China. One comes to mind where he found a flood tunnel under a busy road and set his tent up.

Also interesting to see his skills as a film maker develop thorughout his trip. Really high quality filming, editing and presentation by the end.

And half the streets have Barbie's especially round coastal beach and reccy areas

Did he give you any chocolates? Life's just like that.

My friend and her husband are in their 70s and think 100 miles is an easy day! They have cycled all round Europe, across the USA, parts of Australia and are now considering parts of Asia.

For their Golden Wedding Anniversary they went to New Zealand and circumnavigated the north island by kayak but didn't manage to get all the way round the south island as it became too stormy for comfort.

We met two young German cyclists at the campsite in Gairloch while we were touring the NW Highlands in June. It had been raining steadily 24/7 since we got there the previous week. Couldn't help feeling very sorry for them, they were drenched when they arrived and set about setting up the smallest 2 man tent you ever saw.
Up til that point we were fed up with the weather but their plight put things into perspective, we'd been many times and always been fortunate with the weather. This could be their first/only time to enjoy the stunning scenery that we take for granted.
It stopped raining next day:Grin:

That’s what I love about travelling around all the different countries you get to meet so many inspiring people :giggle:

Well I meet this Welshman in Luxembourg city and he said he'd been touring 3 weeks and today was the day of his A level results should he go home . So I had another beer looked in the mirror and said John that's not an unreasonable idea let's just take a week getting to Dover. After 25 punctures iN one day (Belgium roads) with no tubes left I got on a train at Mons. Yes dear reader it was me.

I've always admired the stamina of some of the cyclists I've seen up and around the Highlands. I've passed many over the years with so much stuff on their bikes cycling through absolutely torrential rain .

Not my idea of a holiday ...I get pisssed off enough at constant rain in a motorhome. God knows what possess them to do it on a pushbike

I don't think they actively go out seeking the rain but are prepared to cope with it if it arrives. :)

Cycling is an example of the principle that you can never really enjoy something unless you have to work for it.

The feeling of satisfaction as you stop at the end of a hard day of riding is something very special. I enjoy the MH now but miss those moments.

This is not a top trumps story honestly I was impressed before I saw this thread. Just met a UK guy who had done the Normandy beaches on his non electric pushbike, on his way to ferry he wanted to charge his phone from his tiny tent at the campsite and some idiot had plugged into the wrong socket ( whoops)on the stack so he needed to have the top one so he could balance the phone on top.
It was raining , cold. He was 74 for gods sake, big big shout out..

I used to cycle a lot as a teenager but stopped when I got a driving licence. I can't say I miss it lol the same way I don't miss a tent 😅

Waking up in the morning in a little tent near the summit of a mountain or some other remote spot is a magical experience. :)

Back to the OPs post. A few of years ago we were set up at Vöhrenbach - Stellplatz. During the evening four local youths came near us with BBQ gear and one came over to ask if we minded them having their BBQ nearby. Next morning the only signs of their presence was a scorched patch of grass.

Wouldn't it be nice if more had such thoughts for others?

At Le Man's 24 hour race this year 6 youths (well probably in their early 20's) asked if they could borrow some electricity from us to charge thier phones. I let them run an extension lead to my motorhome. Later on when they were sitting drinking they invited us over to join them! I politely declined. The last thing I'd want to do is hang out with people my kids age, especially when they were talking French. But like yours, they were polite, quiet and tidy.
