I think some with pets would never go on the ferry, so as you say, would pay whatever the charge.I don't think that's the whole story because DFDS charge less than half what Eurotunnel do. I understand the need for a business to cover costs and make a profit, I'm just saying it's commonplace for some firms to charge what they can get away with and pricing may be based on little more than that.
My son has to leave his dog in his caravan on the Newhaven ferry but it's for at least 4 hrs (usually more than 5 from the time he parks and then allowed back to his outfit) and the vehicle deck is very noisy; clangings and bangings, warning Klaxons, lorry engines, fumes and occasionally vehicle alarms going off.
