My 700w vacuum cleaner stopped working. I have 1200w Victron inverter and it was working fine till yesterday. I can still use my 800w toaster so plug socket is live and working. Changed the 13amp fuse in vacuum cleaner plug - still not working. Ok I thought it’s only a cheap Amazon basic so maybe it’s just died - so I buy a new Bosch 800w hoover - plug it in - not working! Tested it on mains works fine!? Tried it again hooked up to EHU - still nothing! Any ideas why the vacuum cleaner won’t work when toaster of same wattage does??? Any help gratefully received!

I can only suggest that somehow you aren't getting true sine wave 230v AC and some appliances need sine wave otherwise their electronically controlled motors won't work.

Maybe the start up current of the Hoover is too much? Would that suggest a low battery voltage?

Maybe your battery is toast.

The toaster is a resistive load and the vacuum cleaner is inductive.
Victron inverters are rated in VA which is the correct way to rate AC power.
If your inverter is 1200va approx 850 watts, the rating in watts on the cleaner is approx power not true power so it maybe a bit too high for the inverter.

Could be the EHU on the campsite is rubbish my 5 month old fridge was playing up too so switched it over to gas - all problems started when I hooked up to EHU on the campsite 🙄

Puzzling, indeed. Have you tried a dustpan and brush? :xsmile:

When you say "worked on EHU" I assume you are referring to the new vacuum, through the inverter whilst hooked-up?
If you have access to mains, have you tried the old vacuum on (direct) mains? So has it fried?
Are you aware of any changes before the old vac failed?

How old is the inverter and is it pure sine wave.
Maybe it was JUST within limits at the start and now deteriorated over the years, they can lose 5-10% if old.. Bit like myself

Trying the vac on another inverter could tell... But will be hard to find the same one to test

No tried the new one on the socket in campsite office just to make sure it was working -can’t try the old on as it has UK plug and don’t have adapter - new one won’t work in the van whether hooked up to EHU or not! The only thing I noticed before it stopped working was the EHU hook up tripped and I had to get it reset that’s when the fridge also started playing up - I’m suspecting the campsite EHU has done something to my electrics but can’t figure out what - and yes dust pan and brush are working but very laborious 😂👍

Victron pure sine wave inverter about 18 months old

Dustpan & Brush has worked well for 100's of years, I'd stick with that! 😄

Has your campsite EHU tripped again at the post and/ or have you reset you own consumer unit which may also have tripped/ re-tripped?

EHU tripped at post van consumer unit didn’t trip and have tested it - working fine

It the RCD on the hookup bollard tripped the fault would be after that RCD so either your lead or a faulty appliance is tripping it.

Its not the inverter, maybe your ehu side or the plug/socket you hook up with.
The 1200va inverter serviced my deep well pump wasserkoning 1100w for about 2 years until I upgraded the inv.
victron inverters, have masive overload and surge capability.

We use a battery operated vacuum cleaner. It will charge quite happily on any source of 240volt power and run without distrbing anything.

don't think it’s my lead only few months old - could have been the fridge but that now seems to be working ok now. I have used other appliances of same wattage (eg toaster) on same socket so not the socket just can’t figure it out hence the post! Battery powered vacuum sounds the way to go but really would like to understand why the hoover wont work! 🤔

Vacuum cleaners would never have caught on if they didn’t work better than dustpan and brush 🤔😂
That's like saying we should all wear Timex instead of Rolex.
They both tell the correct time.

The power of the Advertising Industry! 😄
