Anyone in the trade and can help me understand the difference between new and used warranty. I think it is incorrect to call the latter a warranty, it is more akin to an insurance policy.

I had this issue with a Škoda car and the process (we will charge a diagnostics fee if we deem not covered of £120) and amount of coverage is significantly different. Is this the next financial scandal brewing? None of this was explained at time sale. This will be pertinent to me my next MH purchase. Is there an insider that can shed light on this please.

All warranties are insurance. The difference is who backs them. A manufacturer warranty is likely to be more thorough as they've got reputation and recalls to consider.
Not the whole picture though. On a new van the dealer has a much greater legal responsibility even if the manufacturer goes bust as legally there's going to be a much higher standard of what's deemed to be reasonable quality. On a secondhand one a lot will be seen as normal wear and tear especially if pretty old unless it's a defect at the time of sale

We learned the hard way, our autotrail roof started to let in at the joint (5 years old) turns out that the ten year water ingress warranty is on a sliding scale 1 year old 100% 2years old 90% ect at 5 years old we were going to be paying half of the cost. So i repaired it myself during which i discovery just how poor the build quality was , as the market was going crazy at the time i sold it and went back to a German van.
Sorry to hear that you had an issue with your van. It must have been horrifying to find out how badly they're put together. My first venture into motorhomes was a brand new Elldis in 2021 . It was awful, traded it in for Carthago after doing only 2000 miles.
The basic build quality of the Carthago is very good but the " bolt on " features appear to be done in a very slap dash manner. It doesn't help that the manufacturer appears to have a couldn't care less attitude.

Not my experience with Carthago. I had a Fiat bill for repairs that they said were because Carthago had failed to secure part of the wiring harness properly. I took the matter up with the motorhome dealer and within 2 weeks Carthago had refunded my costs. I think a lot depends on the dealer, I suspect the “couldn’t care less attitude” lies with some dealers.

I think different dealers have different buisness models. What we all want is a dealer that's the cheapest with the best aftersales care and who really looks after customers no matter what it costs. I think we all realise deep down that's not realistic!

It’s as you are suggesting with a used vehicle warranty!

The dealers pay a sum of money to a third party to provide a piece of paper with some words on it which they call a warranty!

The words are designed to give you, the layperson consumer, a view that they give a shit and will support you in repairing the vehicle should the worst happen.

The reality is, the clever people writing the words, have deceived the layperson and really don’t give a shit, create loads of spurious exclusions with the intent of never paying out anything ever; if they can get away with it! 🤬
I’ve only ever had to make one claim on a warranty which was for our current Boxer PVC. Warranty company agreed to cover cost of repair only stipulation was I had to use a VAT registered repairer. Total bill was £1003 warranty paid £899 - well chuffed.

Having only ever had German motorhomes up until that piont it was an eye opener to say the least . The very worst engineering decision on all Autotrails in my opinion is they fit the front overhead first then the roof panel on top so that the wind and rain is forced into the seal rather than over it, the dealer told me its a very common leak point and yet they have stuck with it for years instead of coming up with a solution to it, no thought for the customer, personally i would say all the mass produced motorhomes including the german makes are heading that way. Prices going up Quality going down.

I have found out first hand about Carthago's dreadful couldn't care less attitude.
I emailed the CEO in Germany about the list of issues with my van and the time they were taking to resolve these.. This included a badly fitted awning. Originally they blamed the awning manufacturer who rightly denied all responsibly. This went on for months before liability was accepted. The CEO didn't even find it necessary to reply to me. Instead he passed my emails onto a customer service advisor.

Yes they do expect their dealers to deal with the customer it seems - I have had a couple of warranty issues dealt with by our local "agent" (we bought the van new elsewhere), the positive response came back very quickly, as did the response for some information about the electrical installation. My only moan is the time it takes to get the parts, which has been excessive, bad news when it is a unique Carthago only part such as the DS470-CA.
