To be fair in NYC with the prices in a cab to JFK being regulated, it's another reason to tip the bellhop given if you told a driver you were going to JFK without your luggage already being in his boot you'd likely get a drive-off from the driver (a regular cab HATES JFK). I've managed to get our of Manhatten several times due to this. It's one of few times that hailing a cab yourself is not as beneficial. (the cab driver stops you get in, the bellhop loads, and then announces it's to JFK after the trunk/boot is shut!), usually to expletives from the cab driver.
Top tip for from the cruise terminal is just use Uber, its always a madhouse in all the NYC cruise terminals for cabs and limos, and the Uber (XL) drivers seem to arrive within 5 minutes on the 2-3 times we've used them. The taxi queue according to the lady who we saw later that evening in our hotel who took that route took 3 hours!
