URGENT - Govt giving £50 free voucher to get your bike fixed - codes going quick!

The £50 won't cover much....and parts have inflated by up to 50% since Brexit....I'm in the trade....and no I'm not on the scheme through choice as I don't need the work, as most of my customers are in the enthusiast in and e-bike sectors ...most in the trade are using the £50 to cover labour...so beware of parts prices ....plus more are opting out this time....There are also shortages on many parts... hydraulic brakes for mountain bikes, 9 speed bike gearing plus a lot of bike cassettes.... Hope all who get a voucher that it works out for you..... Ride Safe
The £50 hopefully will get an old bike serviced and used again we have 2 old ones that I will be taking in with the vouchers, Bill should be £50 less without the vouchers.

You are correct though my mate at work laughs at the scheme he is a incredible enthusiast, he paid £4000 just for a frame and has spent tens of thousands on bikes.
The scheme is not meant for him and the majority of your customers its meant to encourage people to get cycling again and get a bike checked over to hopefully use again.

This is my pioneer Raleigh early 90s model I am riding, a fiver from the local tip and Cazs Raleigh 80s model.

One of the problems my lbd has is peeps coming in with their rusty bike and being told that it is not financially worth fixing. They claim that the bike was worth hundreds of pounds when they bought it x yrs ago and don't appreciate that it can't be fixed with a bit of 3:1 and a new inner tube. It could take all day to get the bike functioning again and cost £hundreds in parts but it wouldn't be reliable and could never be as safe to use as a new bike that would be available for around £700 if there were supplies available.

Yes in some cases but these 2 bikes are functioning well the 80s model Caz would be happier having it checked over again, it works that will do for me.

I’m all for recycling and reusing but obviously if people are being unrealistic and taking knackered old bikes in expecting to get them done up for £50 that’s a bit daft.

I work with people that don’t even pay £700 for their cars never mind a bike.

Just for info, our e bikes are booked in to a local repair shop for new tyres.the chappie who does it has had some issues sorting tyres for a 20 inch but has found some , apparently spates are pretty tight all round due to Brexit ,and covid hasnt helped.
He reckons he can change both tyres within the £50 scheme. Being tight I don't want to spend any more. (y)
I had a response from the repair agency to advise the repairs have been accepted and that l cannot rebook elsewhere. So all seems to be up and running.the guy I am using is a one man band and is grateful for the work.

Minxy Girl
Thanks for posting! Got my bike and Mrs checked over at Halfords. Well worth it. I had new inner tubes fitted, 2 gear selectors and new brakes as part of the gear selector. I had to pay £11 because the gear selectors were expensive.
Mrs got new innertubes and a new tyre plus a gear change service and nothing to pay.

Very pleased with the result!

xx

Thanks Minxy Girl. I replaced the hydraulic brake levers on Val's bike the year before last at a cost of £72. Mine need doing too and I priced the replacements up this weekend, which I can only get from Italy or Germany at a price of £86 and there might be delivery problems ? I contacted one of the guys from the list and he has an account with Magura and can get the parts in a couple of weeks. He's charging £148, so, with the fifty quid off, it saves me the hassle of swapping them over and bleeding them all for a cost to me of £12 and that's without pricing in a bottle of hydraulic oil too. (y)

As an update,we had our 2 e bikes retyred and tubed and brakes done etc along with a clean up.on one of the bikes the tubes had been filled with green slime puncture stuff so there was an issue ,timewise taking the tyres off.but all in the cost was £60 each bike less the £50 voucher,so £10 for each .good value and they were picked up and delivered back to us The guy we used did say he should have charged more as it was fiddly removing the back wheels due to the electrics but he learned in the process.
Basically if you want a couple of tyres then it's a good deal but if you need a bike resurrecting, it may cost a lot more than the £50 voucher,so beware.(y)

Another scheme that isn't available in Wales... Not a clue why I moved here apart from SWMBO falling in love with the house.. No Covid jab yet while younger friends in England had theirs over a month ago. can't drive to see family in England 11 miles away but can legitimately drive to Cardiff (152 miles) under local rules and piss poor local services yet we pay more for the privilege in council tax... Not a happy Easter Bunny

Thanks for the info. Just booked mine and Mrs Z in for a check up. See what needs doing after that. 😉😉

Did it have a very large wheel at the front and a tiny tiny wheel at the back?
No but I seem to remember it had a revolutionary , for the time, 4 speed gears that you didn't have to stop peddleing to change gear as you did on previous 3 speed gear bikes.
Never very successful though always missing gears, and as far as I know it was quitely dropped.
As I didn't see many more.
This was around 1960/62.
Did anyone else have one?

If you have a bike that you want to get up and running again then the govt have just launched a voucher for £50 max for you to do it FOC but they are going quick, only 150,000 vouchers available and 1 per person (not per household).

<Broken link removed>

Just thought I'd update and let you know that I got my bike back today 👍 New back tyre, front tube and a service. Boris paid :giggle: ;)

Thanks again for the heads-up.

When we had our bikes checked over it cost £70 per bike BEFORE any work was done.

Wow. That's steep. I took mine to the local shop who looked at it for free to see if it was worth pursuing.

He's the only one around and is where several long distance routes converge so he can charge what he wants.

Dad bought me a Sturmey Archer Twist Grip 3 speed for passing my 11 Plus exam in 1964. £26.5s.10d, which was an awful lot of money at the time!

Well I’m glad I applied for a voucher . My bike has just been in for a service and the front forks were on the wrong way around.

Rescued this from the skip at the local tip a couple of years ago the Sturmey Archer 3 speed gears works an absolute treat as does everything else on it.

I took it from the Skip with the help of the staff member and rode it round the tip road.

They don’t make quality like this these days unless you fork out thousands.

The steel bell and Raleigh badge are worth more than the couple of quid paid.

Got mine in this Saturday. The said £55 for service and adjustments including parts up to the £55.
As it's electric if they put it on the diagnostic :Eeek: it will increase to £75.
Whether they meant the allowance increases to £75 I have no idea as the hub motor wasnt on their list..... Bocsh etc...just a cheap Chinese motor.
In any case the motor is fine.
The bike is 4 years old and done far less than 100 miles from new.
Main use is getting me to the pub on a Saturday to get the car left there the night before.....saved a fortune in £5 taxi fares.

It may be just me but I'd be embarrassed asking anyone to fix anything on a pushbike. 😳
