All booked for Le shuttle, cruising down the M11 when BANG this happened. Luckily just near one of those police turn-off’s. Now back home after AA fitted the spare wheel.
New tyre and damage check Monday, rebooked for weds morning on Le shuttle.
MORAL is always carry a spare.

It's a 120 rated tyre so certainly good for the weight on the front of a Fiat (y)
I've just looked up the rating for a 120 tyre and it states 1400Kg load index
My 3.5 tonne van states 1850 Kg on the front (I think the OP's van will be heavier)

What am I missing?

That is 1400kg per wheel and the 1850kg is for the axle, i.e. both wheels

Thanks for the reminder - we need to replace both our front tyres this year, The back ones are like new apparently but we might just bite the bullet and get all 4 done keeping the best as a spare.

Do you think the type and make of tyre was an issue - as they are not camper tyres and much cheaper?
Are they specified for the weight of your van?
It could have been a sharp object that caused it but I wouldn't have those tyres on my motorhome.

I like to keep a record of catastrophic failures of motorhome tyres - not punctures.
Most seem to be due to the excessive age of the tyre - or non standard motorhome tyres.
No problem with the tyres ever before. AA man say’s it was a sharp object. JAWS did an extensive study on van tyres and these came out best.
I wouldn’t have Continental tyres on my van either but some would.

Phil, get them to check the brake pipes. I had a similar blow out on my front nearside wheel. The flying bits of tyre caught the brake pipe and kinked it badly. Had to be replaced, which was costly because of the wheel arches that Hymer had installed on my A class.
All checked out this morning. Drives well, going to france weds now.

I had mine moved back to front after the first two years and 16k miles. Now on 22k and still legal at both ends. I could get another year if I'm lucky.

Just for my own peace of mind I phoned Davanti tyres and explained what happened. I asked their technical guy, Gary, if the DX440 225/75/16/C inflated to 65/70 psi was the correct choice of tyre for motorhome use. He said it was the highest rated tyre at 120 on the market and was the correct tyre. I have ordered another one for today.

Changedcall 4 of mine .although the tread was legal they were rock hard and starting to show small cracks in the tyre walls. After they were changed I asked the tyre fitter if they were dangerous, he looked and lifted an eyebrow as if to say did I really need to ask. It had passed all the MOTs .

Glad you'll soon be on your way. The weather over here on the Italy, Slovenia border is a lovely 31 degrees.
