Tried and failed

I don't think most of the country gets enough snow to make chains worthwhile you'd be taking them on and off all the time. We live at the bottom of a hill near the moors from here to Whitby youd need the chains off then on over the moors then off again. I'd sooner just pay a bit more for all season tyres

Our old corsa was great in the snow the worst seem to be BMW and mercs. Is it because they're rear wheel drive or another reason!
More likely to be due to wide low profile tyres which are useless in snow, the front wheel drive ones don't seem any better

Yeah winter tyres in the uk are great for the 1 or 2 days of snow we get a year

Fair point.
How do they last compared to " normal" tyres and are they usable in summer weather?
Cant afford or store a separate set of tyres.
We have mud and snow tyres on all year

Mud common in the summer / autumn here and snow most winters. Even had snow in June!!!

It's surprising what a difference they make. I was sceptical to start with but am a convert given where we live.

I found when working there were more 4x4 slide cars in ditches than other car. These days I rarely need to go out in the snow!!!

The car at the top had been abandoned.
The van was sliding sideways.
The car behind the van couldnt move.
The big white merc was turning round and got hit broadside by a car sliding down the hill.
Quite an eventful morning .
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
In bed now enjoying a cuppa.
So in this instance, a picture paints er? Not many words :giggle:

I think that the others have covered it.👍

If you have two sets of tyres, your summer tyres will last twice as long.

Even to a Southerner that road looks quite passable, no problem in the Motorhome as I have winter tyres.

Wide low profile summer tyres 😎👌

I'd guess that the Astra, at least, would have "normal" sized tyres, ie not fitted with extra wide tyres ? Therefore they are probably about the same size and profile as the ones on my Golf ? Which has had no bother in the snow.

I used my coachbuilt daily, as an only vehicle, for over 3 years & 100k + kms.
But I think you're in a small minority given the adverts for second hand sales unless there's an awful lot of clocking going on

Probably not, 4x4 maybe but wide tyres and wheels just don’t work in snow.

Apart from Sheila's little Panda 4x4, one of the best cars I had in snow was a Citroen 2 CV, skinny tyres . Did I just admit to owning a 2CV ? Oh the shame :getmecoat:

Surrey, what is this winter of which you speak? ❓
