Traveling with spare fuel

With a range of about 500 miles on a full tank in a Ducato based van why on earth would you bother with cans of spare fuel?

I wish! About 250 miles on my Ducato before it's time to fill up. Mind you, it is a big coachbuilt so has all the aerodynamic qualities of a block of flats, and I think they fitted a small fuel tank due to concerns over front axle loading.

Still don't carry any spare fuel though!

You must have a very small tank or a very large right foot. :D
Ours is a 4.5t A Class and when full the range is about 500 miles.
I think, from memory, the tank is 90 litres.

Fuel gauge on our ducato base never reads fuel anyway, despite numerous efforts of trying to squeeze more in!

o_O
I had my van converted so in an emergency it can run on urine Dave, I take 5 litres in one of those plastic top up things, I don’t normally tell anyone though cos they think I’m taking the piss
Its almost 100% alcohol anyway o_O :wine:

The Garmin satnag came to the rescue when the needle was about to drop below the red zone. It has a petrol station POI database. We were surprisingly near a garage that was open, but not on our main road so we wouldn't have seen it.

Quarter tank refill rule = less stress. Never carried a spare can since my old banger student days.

I do miss the long range of the VW T4. 1200 km / 800 miles on a tankful of diesel.

Now that I've got over throwing up after being reminded of Watney's Red Barrel by you rotters.?

Why would you want to carry a can of smelly diesel in your van, no matter how well sealed it still smells, the thought of lying in bed with the aroma of diesel wafting up from the garage, yuck.
Also illegal to carry on ferries & tunnel, some counties it's illegal.

Worth making sure the tank is topped up in Germany as filling stations on Autobahns can be over 40 miles apart, also it's an on the spot fine for running out of fuel.

Sometimes I wish I had gone for the optional 120 Lt tank.

Best not say what we used to carry

You are allowed to carry a limited amount of fuel on the tunnel. Quantity depends on type of container.

Yes standard 90 Lt, Optional 120 Lt.
Some AT's that have sod all payload fit a 60 Lt tank.

Those who remember Watneys Red Barrel will also be reminded of those other awful beers of the era Double Diamond, Whitbread Tankard., John Bull Bitter, Trophy Bitter. Any more?
Remember also the cans of Party 7. Arrived at many a party with no means of opening it that didn't result in wasting most of it in a shower of exploding beer. Those were the days.

Always carry 20 litres in a gerry can. Only used some once, when travelling on motorways and the price was going up and the gauge coming down and it was getting later. Also in some non motorway trips abroad when you never know if the villages have a fuel station or when they are open.

always carry 5 litres of fuel just in case but also carry cash because 'local' services sometimes dont accept card
