Newby to Motorhome but not to traveling, caravaning and camping
Just bought a MoHo Hymer from Scotland…..I live in south of France! Rather than wait for family to drive it down in June, and the cost of flying them home, does anyone know of transport companies doing this sort of vehicle delivery. Thanks in advance.

Just bear in mind that if you mention you are not a Uk resident no uk insurer will touch it. If you can't get French insurance, via a uk based subsidiary,on the UK plates or vin number try asking abbeygate or Ibex based in Gibraltar.ttps://www.ibexinsure.com/car-insurance/private-car-insurance-benefits?gclid=CjwKCAiAu5agBhBzEiwAdiR5tMEQaCpmCm6oEuFVWCP7yxxGdazcUA-ZfFEABZcD9wOZOrhmVgIyGhoCLHUQAvD_BwE

Actually just remembered these in the Uk who do long term insurance for vehicles kept outside the Uk.

Why not speak to some of the major dealers who import you may find one of thier haulage companies delighted to pick your Motorhome up on thier return journey better to travel with a load than empty. Some one like Simon-Alan Kerr may be able to advise

I just did a bit of digging back in 2018, if this helps this was the company that delivered our motorhome from Hymer to a UK dealer, they are a Dutch company and were pretty efficient (compared to the Dealer)

That’s worth a try. In fact the wife of the seller is Dutch, maybe she could call them for us. It will all fall into place. I’m more used to shipping llamas and goats.

Im pretty sure they are OK with english as well as I saw the their emails to the dealer, have to say the only things I have shipped is Rigolettes during lock down and desperate for a trip to France . However you ship the motorhome hope the transportation goes smoothly(y)

I don't think many run empty these days. Most east europeans & the dutch transporters park up or have already return loads booked. You might get an odd space

Yes the dutch seem to do a fair amount or the inter european delivery & low loader work . Mine was recovered from france back here to spain by a dutch low loader bringing 2nd hand tractors.
That is another place worth lookin . There is a european wide machinery & agricultural sales site both online & with magazines,& there are quite a few transporting companies who advertise on it. Sorry I can't remember the name though?

Agreed most transport companies look for loads for a return journey and as you say some have two way contracts in place but suspect there are the slots available the logistics managers and sales teams are keen to make every journey count

Yes. Lenny HB I am not sure I will not have problems, it has just had a UK MOT, and habitation / damp checks etc. I know I will have to have this redone here, been through all that, see previous comment. Insurance? I’m on the case now.
you previously said its on german plate how would you be able to get amot in uk?i do hope this is a genuine sale

If it's on German plates the MOT, if it really has one, is meaningless
The MOT can't be registered on the VOSA MOT database as they have no vehicle data to link it too and it certainly won't be accepted in France or even Germany.

It is a pity that you did not ask a week or two earlier as I have a week free because other half has gone off skiing.

I have a C1 licence and used to be a professional driver all over UK. I also drove my own MH from Canterbury to S. Poland in two days.

I might still be able to do the delivery if OH agrees. We have direct flights to Edinburgh/Glasgow.

I will PM my phone number - can call you back for free.

I live permanently in France and this van is on German plates. So I expect some problems along the way. But I have experience there, it was almost impossible to reregister our US spec lpg/petrol LHD Range Rover in France, but our old, not quite Classic RHD Land Rover, sailed through on paperwork On line?
so I am now enquiring about the new MoHo.
Talking to a guy in france last October, he had sold his french regesterd (English motorhome) to a dealer back in England. Then returned to France with a £30000 English motorhome. He said he would have to pay £15000 french tax.

Yes son has test driven it, and is taking it away this weekend. We know the seller, if that counts for anything.

It will be expensive. Our 3rd party companies will charge £1.50 a mile plus Vat plus fuel.
Far better to make a nice trip out of it!

Out of interest is that on a flatbed or just a driver ?

And do they charge you for the distance from base to the pick up
and then the distance from drop off back to base ?

(In which case Scotland to Southern France would be eye wateringly expensive!)

Just a driver. Flat beds cost an absolute fortune!

I have had several offers now thanks including a local to us guy in France, who could possibly do the trip. We are having some additional work done on the Hymer before it leaves the UK. So for the moment we are not making a final decision on who can drive it for us.
Thanks Funsters for all the comments and suggestions.

Had a quote just over 2 years back to collect my new van from Bavaria and deliver to my house on the South Coast.
Was about €1’900.00 from memory, was all for it but then when I said it was 3.5m high they could not take it☹️☹️
Was a German company.

If that was a driver driving the van only it is a ridiculous price. I can get an empty artic one way for 3000€ or a low loader? So a low loader with 3 other vehicles on should be far cheaper.
