Trailers on Le Shuttle

I like the tunnel but i have not used it for a long time due to the fact that they charge nearly double if you add any trailer, also our main trip is Xmas and southern Spain so usually the Portsmouth - Santander route where they only charge £40 to add a trailer (last time i checked it ). Much cheaper but then the cost of the crossing on that route is astronomical anyway so they are likely making it up elsewhere.

Swings and roundabouts really but i would always declare it, although I am sure there was a thread on here somewhere where ET were contacted, and they were hinted at not declaring the trailer but choosing the longest length you could.

No idea where that is now though, but i would still declare as cannot be bothered with the issue when you get there, and they just charge you anyway.

Still if they did let you through, and you were willing to risk it then it's a considerable saving :), let us know if you have and they haven't noticed.

How does one value ease of travel and convenience?
Getting across that water onto foreign soil as quickly as poss is worth a few £££s more in my book.

As you are only looking at a scooter so not too heavy, would a rear mounted motorcycle/scooter ramp as supplied by Armstrong among others not be more practical

You’d be looking at 120-130 kg for the scooter and probably another 40kg at least for the scooter rack and chassis mount. So say 170kg on the rear of the van. It’s a 7.5m van with a long rear overhang after the rear axle.

Would need to up plate even more to increase max rear axle weight for that and add rear air.
Would be a canny weight on the rear of the van for that.

For this van better to use a trailer. Westherall a side loading short one or say a motolug.
