Towing a Smart car using an A Frame

My Alto has an A frame and this includes a replacement stronger crossmember. he original one is in the garage at home. Very rarely tow now and not at all abroad

Just bought a 2008 Fortwo Passion Convertible Smart car and am looking to tow it using an A Frame (from Armitage trailers) rather than on an actual trailer. Does anyone tow one of these Smart cars using an A Frame and if so do you have any problems? Thanks for your help

We tow a Fortwo smart car on an A frame. Love it and haven’t had any issues yet (touch wood). Careful with following exact instructions because of great fear of the scary false neutral (I look like I have OCD when setting it up) and we have a reverse camera on it all the time so we can keep an eye on it. Did I say I love it?

It gives you some where to store the generator if you tow a car on an Aframe. Haha

I’ve towed 2 of these without any problems at all, the lates one a 2017 model (Renault based now) is not towable as they have gone to a fully auto, not the triptronic, so these later models are no longer compatible with Aframes.

Not if it’s a Smart car

, there’s no room
OOOOOOh ! Wrong ! 7 bags of compost at 75 liters , 6 x 12 inch hanging baskets and a box of cupcakes! Smart for two 2009! Now if my missus can get that in her car....a bloody generator would fit with a 5 gallon can of fuel too!

Lol ....Im with peterc10...Pop corn anyone?

A frames are like grey water waste ....Entertainment!

By the way....pulled a smart fortwo for ages . Stop faffing about!

Was actually joking, I’ve had a washing machine in mine with passenger seat folded flat.

Bloody amazes me sometimes how she does it? I struggle to get stuff in my car with out knocking anything about!Panel damage that is. My Missus...she throws stuff in the smart and no word of a lie...does not mark a thing! How? You sometimes can barely see through the rear window?
Bless her!

Washing machines? I would have to draw a line at that one? lol

How much is the a frame costing ?

For long evity and the ability to use abroad should you later wish to and also for residual selling value I'd buy a trailer.

Easier to reverse too

I'd only ever buy a car and a frame if it came as a package already fitted.

I bought a Renault Clio with a frame for £650 back in 2014 but didn't like towing it so sold it 3 months later.
Yes how much is an Armitages A frame cost fitted to a Smartcar

Weighing up,buying one without and having proper braking A frame fitted (Armitage's).
Or buying a smartcar with one fitted.👍

Whatever you tow on an A frame it will need a proper crossmember. On my Smart they removed the original one and put in something stronger. On the Up I think it is a separate additional crossmember.
Yes it is a separate crossmember on an up when we had one on an A frame 12ish years ago.

Anyone want to buy an Up with a TAF Chesterfield A frame. I no longer tow it.

I saw an interesting A frame fitting at Malvern where the A frame was vertical and held in position with some sort of modification/support. Good if you meet traffic on a narrow road and need to un-hitch. Not sure this would be possible on our Smart 451 with Armatige A frame.

If it starts to steering shake after a sharp turn stop and restart or it will wag the dog as well as the tail. the length of your overhang is the thing that does it. swings it one way and then the other starting a resonance going. Mine did it once in the first mile so I cottoned on what was happening and fine ever since. I does however make the van a lot more steady on the move, when the trucks pass it does not shake the van as happens when it is solo.
I have learned something today .I see many reports that a large van ( mine is over 8m) oftens handles badly and gets buffered by Lorry’s and wallows on corners . To be honest I have never really understood this as mine is very stable ……..now I know why ! We always tow a small car on an A Frame lol 😜
