tow bar mounted bike racks

We also have the thule 925 tilt carrier, use it on the camper and the car excellent bit of kit and solid as a rock. Would highly recommend.

Hi All

Do any of you use the tow bar mounted style bike racks I am looking at buying the Thule 933 2 bike rack which clips onto the tow ball and is suitable for 2 electric bikes. I have read good reviews about the product but I am just concerned about it moving / tilting with 50kg of bikes on it as it is only held there by gripping a 2 inch ball????

Does anyone use one and how sturdy are they as I don't want to be looking at the rear view camera every 2 minutes to check the bikes are still there

Thanks

LB
Hi I’ve got aThule 2 electric bike rack. It’s locked on and never moves a mm.
PS. It’s for sale if you’re looking for one

We have the Thule two bike tow ball mounted rack. No problems with out heavy electric bikes but I do take the batteries off and store them in a front locker. Balances out the loads and mean if anyone tries to steal them its a lot of pushing rather than pedalling!!!

You do need to remember to tighten up the adjuster knob on Thule racks to make sure the rack is as tight as possible on the ball. Other than that we carry 2 electric bikes on ours with the batteries on with no problem.

I have the Atera Genio Pro. It has the advantage that it tilts back almost horizontal. I am able to open the tailgate on our Transit Custom whilst the rack is still attached to the towbar, albeit I had to make a couple of minor adjustments for our vehicle. On many VW and Merc vans the tailgate can be opened without modification. There are 2 cables which support much of the weight of the rack and bikes when fully tilted. We bought the rack as it will safely take two 30kg e-bikes, which we will upgrade to when we run short of leg power!

I purchased a Thule 933 Easyfold XT 2 last year and it is absolutely fantastic - less than 5 minutes to put the 933 on then load both e-bikes (54kg combined bike weight). It never budges an inch and when we go off cycling it is about 2 minutes to get the bikes off and the rack into the boot. The lowering feature is great when you need to open the tailgate after you have put the bikes on. I always remove the batteries. I also have a steering lock on the bikes that prevents theft. Finally, I am a great fan of Thule and also have their velocide rack in my MH garage tp enable the bikes to slide in and out.

Apologies for the delay in responding. I could just about get in if I had to but it wouldn't be much fun. Very happy with it so far though. I didn't want to hang the weight off the door in case someone tried to pull it off - my 25yr old mountain bike has a lot of value to me!!

Apologies for the delay in responding.

No problem, it's good of you to make the effort. I think I have all the info I require now. Thank you for your valued input.

Rog here.

we bought and I fitted a left swinging VanSwing and a Westfalea BC60; the older model because it was super cheap on Amazon.

Fitting the Vanswing wasn’t straight forward but it wasn’t difficult either. The most challenging tasks were unbolting the fiat tow ball (thanks Halfords service centre and your impact driver), removing the bumper to attach the left hand supports and drilling said supports (they come blank to accommodate variances in van fit) and mainly the weight of the van swing itself. It weighs 45kg and it’s a two person job to lift it into place and tighten the main bolts.

We brought the Halfords Advanced 3 Bike Rack.

Here:

Does what it says. We have carried 2 electric bikes on it, bo problem.

Halfords fitting was fun as they didn't really know how to fit it correctly at first but got there in the end when another guy took over.

Not sure how easy to remove and install because we use it on the wife car which has a removable tow bar so it's easier to take the bike rack off the car with the tow bar attached.

Was a lot cheaper than the Thule and has 5 year guarantee.

I currently have a Thule velospace which allows partial opening of the rear doors on a Ducato PVC. Does anyone have a tilting rack for 2 bikes that will allow full opening of the doors without having to remove the bikes? I like the look of the Westfalia BC60 as it folds quite compact for stoarge or the Altera Strada DL3.

We bought the Atera Strada DL3 last year for our brand new PVC. It’s a Fiat Ducato. We still needed a 1 inch spacer for it. That’s on a Witter tow bar. It works well. Obviously it sticks out more than the Thule and appears to waggle about more which is a bit disconcerting if you foolishly decide to look at it when travelling at speed in your reversing camera!
It is nice though when you’re only staying for a night or two. It just doesn’t feel as sturdy as the Thule.

We use one which is tow ball mounted. Also a motor scooter rack which carries 110kg on the same tow ball. 50kgs is perfectly safe.

I have a Thule Easyfold XT2 for 2 e-bikes and it folds up nicely to go in the boot of my Qashqai. With thr rack tilted down I have full access to the hatchback without removing the bikes.

Van swing cycle carrier right or left from Roadpro May answer your question.

Hi Bill. An easy lift. Rated up to 200 kg. Fits on the tow ball and locates into two eyes giving it stability. Been all over Europe with it. I can send you a couple of pictures next week if you like. Phil

Hi Lorger

I have a brand new Witter ZX302 for sale!
It’s never been used. It takes two bikes with a max load of 60kg. The mech that fastens to the tow ball, locks with a key and the bikes can be tilted forward away from the van, if you need access!
It’s for sale if your interested?
Any reasonable offer🙏

I did look at the Witter one, but post 48 put me off.
It would me too. There are a number of different models and ours is totally different to the one Nomad 14 has for sale. Ours is the one that has wheels on it so it is easy to wheel to and from the vehicle when removed.
Edit: Ours is Witter model no: ZXE502.
