Hi
We are planning a trip to Scotland at the end of April and for two or three weeks. We have an 8.2 metre motorhome.
I wondered if anyone can give any advice/recommendations of places to visit and stay.
We thought of doing the NC500 but not too sure now.
We want to go to the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel. We also would like to night stop at places with beautiful views.
Are there still places to overnight ?
What about small sites, do we need to book for that time of year?
We haven’t been to Scotland for years and then it was with a caravan. What are the roads like now?
Any advice will be very welcome as we are hoping to plan our trip this week.
TIA

Have a look at some of the itinerary's if a bus can get there so can you .however remember they will be on the same roads as you possibly coming towards you

Good idea. Thanks

We did a whistle stop tour in our 8m. Got on just fine. Here is our PolarSteps:

It's a work in progress...

I have an itinerary I can share, based on recommendations from Funsters. Happy to share; just ask, which will remind me to post it later.

The last known prices for The Falkirk wheel is £15 per night parking in the top car park, fresh water taps are scattered along edges. Showers and elsan point are around the building at the bottom, you can hire a key. The Kelpies was £7,50 last year with no facilities.

Lots of lovely stopovers but IMO the NC500 is over rated. The Western isles are much prettier if you can click with the weather.

There’s a campsite I use Monifeith near Dundee called Riverview Campsite. It’s one of our favourite weekenders. Beautiful campsite that sits almost right on a beach.
Also great seaside fish and chips just 200m up the road.
Only issue there is a railway bridge to get to it with a 3.2m height.

Blair Atholl Castle site , not cheap but big fully serviced pitches, visit castle and gardens, lovely walks from site , hotel in village for food and drinks , cracking fish and chip shop nearby , House of Bruar nearby with parking for van ( coach spaces) for shopping .

The Loft Restaurant near here is one of the best I have ever been to!

I have sent you a map.

Some ideas

Alwick Casle

Blair Athol Castle

Sterling Castle

Edinburgh Castle --- Park & ride train from Prestontans

Culzean Castle

Falkirk Wheel

Kelpies at Falkirk

Pitlockry

Oban – A816 – A83 to Loch Lomond Tarbet – DO NOT use the A82 north above Tarbet

Fort William

Caingormes

A939 Breamar to A95 Elgin

We want to go to the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel.
We stayed at the Kelpies in December went to pay and the guy told us no charge in winter and you can now stay at the top car park from 2023.

Just a plea from an ex-coachie, please DO NOT park in coach bays even if there appears to be lots of room, unless it is specifically authorised. Due to how coach touring works it's not unusual to have several arrive together and I will guarantee you will find yourself blocked in with the drivers refusing to move as it forms a part of their legally required break. Have had several episodes of "unpleasantness" due to this.

The Kelpies is sandwiched between the A9 and the M9 so not very peaceful for an overnight. Parking at the Falkirk Wheel is higher up so a bit of a view. Morrisons Falkirk has LPG. Loch Ore is a nice spot for a night or two and you can do a "splash & dash" there.

On your way up the east coast Arbroath. Have a few 'smokies' there.

I sometimes think some folk think the NC500 is the only road in Scotland!.
We going north in April, yet again, been dozens of times and still plenty to see! and will be travelling on the many other roads in the Highlands that join/leave the NC500..
I.E. B876, A882, B870, A897, A836, etc and the many even more lesser roads that criss cross the Highlands north of Inverness.
Get out the rat race and away from the crowds and experience what Scotland is really about..👍👍👍

Dornoch and Brora miles of beaches on your way to the NC500 , but agree done it before it existed and there are loads of other routes that you can follow going on and off the main NC500 route.

Who is taking you on your workshop.
Hi Bill, Gary Gough, he is local to me and there are 5 of us meeting up on Harris. They are stopping at the lodges at Finsbay whilst I will be in my van at Lickisto black house camping.

Information came from the guy in the hut that takes the money at the top car park so I took him at his word.

Walking, what’s that ? 🥴 I had thought about that but most of the Outer Hebrides are relatively flat so I should be able to manage it 👍🏻 how did you find his teaching methods? I hope he doesn’t keep clearing off to do a utube vid!
On an side note I will be featuring as the ‘apprentice’ in Canon Photo Plus magazine which is out on the 7th, I went out for the day with Andrew James who was a long time Practical Photography editor and now does a bit for various mags along with his professional work. It was a good day but weather was grey turning dreek from lunchtime. I wasn’t happy with my shots but they’ve used them.
