Toulouse bike thefts

This is the second wearable lock , my wife wears this one .

We have Recobike tags fitted to our eBike and tadpole eTrike. Destroys the frame if you want to remove them, so parts only. We also use Abus alarm and 2 10mm+ chains. Scrotes can find somebody else to feed off.

also please be careful in Portsmouth docks, I was parked in the over spill parking near the toilets, 2 lads were cutting the bike locks with a battery grinder on someone’s mh, I caught the one, but the other got away. The security man said it happens daily

Portsmouth notorious for bike thefts but a bit cheeky even by their standards to be 'working' in the dockyard . . .

Very rough area, when I had the council contract we did a job in Portsmouth and that was bad went to meet the school caretaker of a job to price in Landport just by the dockyard and once he started telling me about the trouble they have I trebled the price so I didn’t get it😂😂

Jo had her 6 month old Trek hybrid (£650 worth) nicked in Avignon about 7 years ago. We had locked the bikes with a (very) heavy duty cable lock either side of a lamppost right in the centre of the town on a pedestrian street with masses of people about. The European Triathlon Championships were being staged that weekend-it was Friday night-so there were huge numbers of cyclists and expensive bikes everywhere. We went for a quick beer and were gone about 20 minutes-her bike had gone but mine was still there with the cable looped round so it appeared to still be locked! We think they intended to come back for mine-looking at the cable they had a hell off a job chewing through it so someone must have noticed them at work on it. We reported it to the local police who were completely uninterested until I showed them a picture of the bike and the cost of it online-to be fair he said it was very unlikely they would find it and that being a University town they were always getting bikes stolen.
We use a massive heavy duty chain lock now with a supposedly un drillable integrated lock and where possible lock to a piece of street furniture-as said above if they really want our bikes they will have them-I just try to make them harder to steal than the ones next to them……..

This seems to me like the old times before car manufacturers got the shit together and started fitting better locks. Expensive bikes should have an integral brake and in the case of e-bikes an e/m brake. Unfortunately most chains and shackles still give in to a portable grinder, but anything to slow them down helps.

A warning for anyone intending to go into Toulouse by bike. Friends had both their locked bike stolen whilst in Toulouse. Bikes locked at a location with many other bikes. Police said when they reported the thefts that they are getting around 12 a day stolen at the moment.
If they are having that many stolen, and they know about it, then the police are not doing their job, they should set up traps.

We had our brand new ebikes stolen from outside Decathlon in Toulouse in April. They were locked to a proper bike park in full view of a CCTV camera. We were in the shop about 20 mins. The police refused to check the camera footage as they said the scrotes would be wearing hoodies and covid masks, plus they didn't have the time, they get around 20 bike thefts reported a day.
Our insurance paid up in full but all the hastle was a pain in the butt, especially as our van was being repaired at the time and our bikes were our only form of transport.
OMG thats worst than the previous one, If they are having that many stolen, and they know about it, then the police are not doing their job, they should set up traps.

Keep them in the garage, or when out cycling, one stays with the bike at all times, sad but necessary 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you’ve got a Bosch drive motor there’s an alarm that’s wired in he casing powered by the battery, alarm if anyone moves it and a built in tracker which is accurate. £4 a month I think

We concidered putting the bike chargers (which we still had) up for sale (dirt cheap) on the local Gumtree and see if the scrotes turned up to buy them.

Never had any attempts to steal our bikes. Probably because they are 1. Not electric 2. Old and cheap! They do the job for us though.

Litelok are controversial. They seem to get accreditation, but then this happens:

Got our (non-electric) bikes from the recycling centre just before we came away, 2 for £35 nothing wrong with them apart from a little bit of rust on one handlebar. Amazing really what people throw away! If anyone steals them we’ve already had our monies worth out of them!
Yes same here with this one of ours, a fiver from the tip, never ever lock it. Nothing done to it at all, sturmey archer gears work a treat

Interesting video though i do note that the ground was used for leverage and i was always advised not to place the lock or chain or padlock close to the ground where leverage could be used .
As i stated the litelok I use is just one of literally several layers of security i use to protect my e bike .
I’m under no illusions that to a well equipped criminal with the appropriate tools and time that my bike could be stolen , the sad sad fact is that hoping that the vile criminal will move on to a lesser protected target . Not an edifying ambition .

I would also add that the first thing I thought before the cutting started, was how small the cable was, it didn't look as if it would stretch round an average lamp post.

As previously stated this is the lock we use to anchor , the lite lock is used to lock the two bikes together .
