Come to Germany! It's great for motorhoming/van life.
I'm wondering whether to splash out and buy the TomTom GO Camper. Would love to read a test report or two about it but so far there don't seem to be any - or if there are, I've missed them/can't find them.

Any user reports from our members out there?

A report on 22-05-17 about the TomTom GO 6200 claimed that

"Until April 25, 2017 it was impossible to show third party poi's on the route display. That feature has now been added BUT there is still no support to add a bmp icon, only the ov2 file. This means that all third party poi's are displayed with an X making it impossible, for example, to differentiate between a National Trust site and a Campsite."

Having POIs for the supermarkets, another chain of shops and the bank we use is something really important and something I'm looking forward to, and in this regard I found a wonderful website with exactly what I'm looking for:

https://poiplaza.com/?p=co

Could I download such POI files onto a TT GO Camper unit, does anyone know, and be able to show on scteen different symbols for the different supermarket chains, etc.? And then fix a route and navigate from current position to that POI?

Thank you for your patience. I've used a sat nav very little and have much to learn.

I recently splashed out on a TomTom Start 52 as it had the whole of Europe on it with free map upgrades for life and a 5" screen. Once I got it home I found I could not put my POIs of Aires onto it, so now am running 2 satnavs at the same time, my 15 year old 700 that I can no longer see the screen, but has the POIs on, and the new Start 52 for route planing.

Don’t forget UPGRADE FOR LIFE is what Tom Tom deem to be the life of the equipment.

I got mine in Aldi , for £185 they often do deals on them .. so do some searching for best price

Never been able to download a list of poi to put on there but i also dont have the patience to try and do it.

Not sure how much info they hold but they can chomp through available memory

In the end it does what i want and that is what matters

I have recently bought one as the one in the motorhome is a car Sat Nav even though a new Fiat Euro 6. Pity Fiat when doing bases for Camper conversion don't put in a truck/camper Sat Nav.
My new Go 6200 Tom Tom was useless on our recent travels in Spain and Portugal, so much so I ditched it for my old TT Camper even though maps out of date.
When I came home I saw that Tom Tom had at last brought out a new camper version. Not used it in the motorhome yet. What I do like is I can do updates via the WiFi, much easier than connecting to the laptop. Also as linked to My Drive it immediately showed all my routes, favourites etc that I had put onto the Go 6200. It also has ADAC Camper sites, ANWB sites and Camper Contact sites. I do miss being able to create my own icons and being able to add French Aires under one heading etc.

Loading POIs on Garmin is very easy and straightforward .. no steep learning curve, no need to go into files or know how to do it

Garmin have a POI Loader software that does it for you.. for example, the Camprcontact POI set for Europe can be downloaded (free) , load onto the sat nav using the POI loader, (for Mac or Windows,) you can then navigate to any POI from the Garmin menu.. when driving it shows the nearest POI with basic information.. select it and off you go.. no need to input GPS co-orders, Post Code or address.. it is just so convenient.. and time saving..

POIs are very small files , and the Garmin has a micro-sd card slot to add more memory if required

Log onto TT MyDrive.
Go to "My Places"
There are 2 tabs: Favourites & POI Files - click on the latter :)
At the bottom is a button "Import POI File"

Obviously, you need to have them in .ov2 format, but there are apps out there to do that.

These will then download to your device next time you use it within WiFi range.

Go to "Settings/Appearance/Show POI lists on map".
You can then select 5 different icons (nothing fancy (n)) to allocate to each of your sets.

My tomtom go 6200 professional or truck sat nav has wifi update capability i know there are a couple of 6200 models a car one and the truck one had mine about a year but i do run a 2nd tomtom as well.

On my old tomtom a go 610 battery was a problem died after a couple of years but is still usable with 12v supply or direct from computer for updates

We have a Garmin camper one which is brilliant...you talk to it and it does as it's asked...so it can look for POIs as you drive..so if we want to visit a supermarket between stops it will find one and take us there 'safely' as we've put our measurements in. It also has Camper contact sites in and Park4nite.... Definitely recommend it.

My tomtom go 6200 truck it can tell you about updates press it and update it but i am experiencing for a 2nd time problem with downloading you also lose maps and it takes hours to reload them.

So although the sat nav works and i am happy with it i would be very careful updating it while on the road far safer to get home and update at home been updating for an hour now and only got to 14%

With the internet on your phone, is their now a need for POIs as you can google them. you can even find them by voice search.

I suspect the TomTom 6200 is on the way out - I've had 2 emails now offering them at 25% discount.
Looking at the comments above, it wouldn't suit me. I use quite a lot of POI's, mainly because I do my route planning in another programme and get the POI's for that.
I'll carry on with my GoLive 1005. Maps still available and enough spare memory to do all I need.

Thanks for all replies.

Scotjimland, you replied that:

It was the 6200 that you didn't buy, I understand, not the Go Camper? I've spent quite a lot of time looking into the Go Camper on the TomTom website, on the forums there, and as far as I can now ascertain it is still the case that only a limited number of symbols are available to mark ones personally inputted POis, such as those from third-party sites. It will probably be a case of using the five symbols that Rapido925M here in the comments has already mentioned.

What I want to be able to do is to show various POIs, for example for two or three nationwide supermarket chains, while actually driving. In other words, I want these (etc.) to show up on the map and I want to know that I'm approaching one of them or one of them lies ahead. I want to be able to recognise the supermarket etc by its symbol but according to what I've been able to find out this isn't possible. I posted a question on the TomTom forum as below. I've edited it slightly but have retained the gist. I'm also including the replies I've had.

So now I'm going to look at the 660 LMT-D. I don't remember coming across this in my searches, not on Which? magazine pages nor anywhere else.

Creation, saving and display of POIs on TomTom Go Camper (May 2018)

I want to be able and display on whatever new sat nav I buy (I would like to get the TT Go Camper, this new model) my preferred points of interest, through creating my own categories. And when driving, I want to be able to see (and be alerted to) the fact that I'm near one of them. I live in Germany and from this site

https://poiplaza.com/index.php?p=dc&c=18&lpg=&d=&pg=19

I want to be able to download the Postbank, and the Aldi and Rewe supermarket set, among others, and have them shown on my device, by means of their distinctive symbols, when I want to see them. I also want to use this, below:

https://www.campercontact.com/en/content/downloads

and this paid-for Smart Refuelling, Germany:

So before buying, I'd like to ask someone at TomTom whether I can do all (or some) of this, and would be glad to have a straightforward and unequivocal answer.

An answer: The TT Go Camper (New model) or any of the later/latest NAV4/5 (Wi-Fi) devices will not fit your specified criteria

Thanks. AND of course it's not just a matter of being able to see POIs. I want to be able to navigate to any particular one.

"NAV 5": so is the GO Camper NAV 4 or NAV 5?

Hi
@popotla

The Latest GO Camper is a NAV5 (Wi-fi) device

Re 3rd Party POI associated .BMP Icons...
See... https://en.discussions.tomtom.com/g...s-on-a-go6200-1037447/index1.html#post1226754

You will be able to Navigate to a 3rd party installed POI
I have 107 3rd Party POI Categories installed on each of my devices

1) Depends what you mean by alert. None of the current devices will alert audibly you when you are near one.

2) And while you can display them on your map, note you only have a choice of a few generic icons which are not particularly distinctive.

I just posted a reply but it seems to have disappeared. I saw it there, but no longer ............... . Odd.

I would say yes, most definitely..

you won't find the POIs for CMC CLs, or the Campercontact and Park4night entries by Googling, which also requires a data connection. .

I don't use my phone for navigation, I've tried several mapping apps, Google Maps and Apple maps, they are ok for everyday use when out and about, but not a patch on a dedicated sat nav such as the Garmin Camper. Not going to list the features, read here https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/570175

You can also use BaseCamp to plot a route on your PC or Mac, then load onto the unit..

but whatever suites .. that's just my choice

I have a TT go 60 and it would not take POIs in a way I could do so I had an expert put mine in for me. worked fine UNTIL i did and upgrade and it all went west. Not bothering again.

Wish i hadn't responded to this thread my tomtom 6200 professional is giving major grief lost maps and cant update even using computer - sat nav does nothing apart from you need to install map to update - cant even get map to install - fortunately just under 1 yr old and bought from currys via paypal - which again has caused a problem - but sat nav has failed and curry's 2nd visit will give me voucher to spend in store after producing curry's jargon on faulty goods - originally told to sort with tomtom though - just missing auxiliary connector which i have now found so back to curry's tomorrow for credit note.

Not going to knock tomtom or any other make but i reckon it is a friday afternoon job on my sat nav

POSITIVE NOTE: i don't have any problems on my TT6200Pro in terms of updating or loading maps. :)

NEUTRAL NOTE: you don't have to have every set of POIs displaying at the same time: you could allocate each of the 5 symbols to a different shopping experience AND each of the 5 symbols to a different camping experience AND each of the symbols to a different tourist experience etc BUT just enable the sort of experience you are interested in. Fiddly I know but better (?) than allocating one symbol to camping, one to shopping, etc.

Gordon

PS My old Go720 allowed all sorts of symbols plus user defined ones: that's progress for you! (n)

Mt advice FWIW . Spend a fraction of the £80 on Co-Pilot and put the TomTom on ebay :)

I fancied a change from my Garmin 770 and I like Tomtom traffic so I bought a Tomtom go Camper. What a mistake.

I wasn't bothered by not having icons, only coloured dots for poi on the screen, I could get around that. However, the thing took ages to cough into life when turned on and the interface in the menus was like watching paint dry. Press the screen and wait for what seems an age. There may be voice control but that rarely worked and when it did, that too was very slow and it did not have a search facility, its not possible to ask it to find anything by voice except items in recent destinations or favourites so if on the road and one fancies a snack its no good saying "Find place, Mcdonalds" etc.

Route planning seemed ok and traffic incidents were found on the route quite well although as with Garmin there were some false positives in that I was warned about heavy traffic ahead when there wasn't any.

Probably the most glaring omission from the screen is that you cannot tell whether the route being driven is for a car, camper or caravan. This can only be selected by going into the setting menu so you have to check every time otherwise its would be very easy to find yourself on a small road suitable for a car but not a larger vehicle.

The good points = traffic for the most part, the poor points = everything else really.

I did need to contact Tomtom support several times to try to sort out one or two matter like not having the promised lifetime speed camera ad traffic updates and there was a problem with audible warnings. They were very good, unfailingly polite and helpful.

So it's back to my Garmin. Much better display, very fast interface, great search both by voice and keyboard and the device does much, much more than Tomtom, its also very easy to see what type of route is planned because its on the screen.

I have returned the Tomtom for a refund, when compared to Garmin its pretty pathetic and at £369 probably overpriced by £300.

Sorry Garmin in a moment of madness I was unfaithful, it won't happen again.

I don’t quite understand why you see this as an issue. The setting that you refer to (like any other setting) remains as you’ve selected. It doesn’t change of its own accord.

Not sure why you feel that this needs to be visible all the time. I don’t need to see on the display that I’ve set the Route Planning default to be “always take shortest route”. If that’s how I’ve set it, I accept/know that.

If someone used it in a car and then forgot to change the routing preference to camper, and then used it in a motorhome its quite possible to plan a car route thinking it was a camper route. it might not happen but it could easily if someone was in a hurry perhaps, or otherwise pre occupied. Other settings are less critical, route mode, I think is more important.

I think its a silly omission from a "Camper" sat nav and that, taken together with an interface thats like walking through treacle was less than impressive for what should be a top end device.

Well after several years of excellent service with a TomTom Go 1005, after several occasions of running out of memory decided to treat myself to a replacement. I'm not convinced the Camper versions are worth the extra money, especially as they also look to have fewer goodies than the standard. So when TomTom offered me an excellent deal on the GO 6200, for about £150 less than the Camper versions I've gone for it. (I don't need the satnav to tell me which road I can/cannot use, I've got my own common sense for that).

So it arrived on Friday and I've been setting it up, playing with it. The operation is a little different to the 1005 but quite intuitive and I love the bigger screen. Adding POI's was a bit puzzling at first but a quick glance at the TomTom forum solved that - bit disappointing that I can't use my own icons, minus mark for the TT programmers, but I can live with it, it's certainly easier to set up. I won't be using all the functions, for instance the phone interface, as I have that on the radio, but the lifetime maps, camera warnings, automatic updates by WiFi etc. are to me a real positive. I'm still not sure if I need the phone switched on to get traffic updates, the marketing and the online manual don't seem to be clear about that although the unit itself seems to think it's getting them! Hey ho, we'll see.

But the proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating so I'm looking forward to putting it to serious use. I might try a trip or two in the car to start with (no need to change the "mode"!)

It actually says calculating Camper route on the right hand side whilst making the calculation. How much more indication do you want? It is also very easy and flexible to re order all the menus in any order you like.

Well, I missed that and yes I know its easy to reorder menu items but that doesn't make the slow interface and lack of voice search acceptable, not for me anyway.

I agree it's a long way from cheap but I am pleased with mine. Once a Garmin Man etc.

I have got the go 6200 biggest problem i have found is on updating when if away even with built in wifi it can lose maps and you then need to re-download it - i only update map now at home on computer and it can take hours.

Just a word of caution as i found out the hard way and fortunately had back-up sat nav
