Does anyone have any information on the toll costs from Calais to Milan

It depends on your vehicle and the route you intend to take. Under 3500kgs van (class 2) Calais to Geneva (ish) one way, around £120 then approx £40 (lasts a year) for the Swiss vignette. Italian motorway tolls around a tenner or less?

Thank you for that 👍

How do they know the gross weight of the van - my van would look the same as a 3500 although it’s 3850kgs?

Honest answer, I don't know. That's the limit before going into the next class, beyond that it's up to you 🤷

Got to disagree with this. It’s to do with the height of the moho, our 2.9 mtr high 5250kg tag axle goes through every toll booth as class 2. Anything over 3mtrs you have to tell them it’s a camping car on the intercom.

Thanks for that - I somehow thought it was a height thing. They cannot check every vin they would be there forever

That doesn’t work or never has for me

I suspect this thread is opening a can of worms 🙈😊

Sorry about that but it does for us, every time in France and Spain. 2.9 mtrs high, 8mtrs long, tag axle, 5250kgs, class 2 no arguments.

Always get charged Class 4 as we're over 3 metres and have 3 axles - camping car doesn't come into it! Even harder now as most tolls seem to be unmanned now.

Mine is a tag axle, 5000kg, 2.9 metres high. Always goes through as class 2.
I assume it should be class 3 or 4 (as over 3500kgs) but I’ll take class 2.

First measure seems to be height, and if it’s under 3 metres the measuring systems don’t seem to consider weight. That’s my experience over 11 years and 5 motorhomes, all over 3500kgs and under 3 metres high. All charged at class 2.

Ok - we will be rocking up to the pay booths, under 3m and provided the dam credit card works then the booth should recognise the van as class 2. Have I got that right ? 😊

Never had a problem with a credit card at the tolls.

Worked for me 95% of the time when we had the 5t tag Burstner.

My Autotrail is 3.1m high and has always gone through French tolls at class 2. Maybe there’s a midge of tolerance or too much wine on board.

I’ve been charged class 2, 3 & 4 in France.
The tolls are operated by different companies and all seem to charge discretionary.
I’ve been charged class 2 by a person in the booth as they said I was a camping car (didn’t argue at that) and class 4 at an automated barrier when after I pressed the intercom and said he suis camping car, he replied Non and hung up!
One guy said I can’t be a lower class because he’s counted my axles on the cctv.
(5200kg tag axle 9m & 3.3m high)
I would suggest expecting to pay what the above class chart suggests and if you can get charged at a lower class by trying it in via the intercom with je suis camping car and vive la France except in sport, trade & politics, farming and fishing, then happy days.

We always get charged as class 2 (4.25t GVW with A frame car on rear), I suspect the height sensor see we are under 3 metres and assumes we are 3.5 gvw (as most French camping cars are). I would not be concerned at all regarding the comment above regarding cops and V5’s. Its not your fault you are being charged incorrectly, and it would be a private matter anyway.
