We are now camped at Estanyet near Les Casas d'Alcanar and it is a lovely site where we will stay for the Christmas period. Its 17 euro (ACSI) a night including EHU and Wi-Fi and the owners wife cooks delicious meals to eat in or take back to the van. Take away Spaghetti Carbonara 3.50 euro a portion which is outstanding value. If there are any Funsters in the area looking for a Christmas stopover then we would love to see you for a glass or three.

We have stayed at so few Spanish campsites it is difficult for us to gauge this one against others, but it is on the beach (pebbles) quiet, scenic, spotlessly clean, very friendly owner, fabulous homecooked food, nice pitches with EHU and Wi-FI all in for 17 Euro per night so we think it is lovely. There are some people here who arrived in September and are not leaving until April so it must suit them well. Most of the campers are German or Dutch with just two Brits but there are more arriving every day prior to the Christmas holiday. My only niggle is that the grey water waste disposal is a long walk from our pitch so it will entail much to and fro with the Blue Bucket of Servitude. However the water tap is close by for the Green Watering Can of Life as is the disposal point for the Grey Cassette of Convenience. Must go now as the temperature is rising rapidly and its time to top up the tan.
Note:- The roads we have driven on so far, both motorways and rural roads have been in very good condition and the road surface is much quieter than UK roads. How come an economy like Spain's, which is supposed to be on its arse, can manage brilliant roads and in the UK we have to put up with roads that would only just qualify as an East European goat track??????

We have been on the road for nearly two weeks now and below are just a few random observations.
In Spain it appears it is against the law not to have an annoying barking dog. The dog is encouraged to bark at any time, but there are times when it is compulsory for it to make a racket. Barking must commence as soon as there is any sign of a British camper trying to get a good night's rest and must be performed with vigour and at the highest volume possible. Gaps must be left in the barking of a duration just long enough to lull the camper into believing that the dog has finally stopped, before continuing with renewed enthusiasm. If you are really lucky said pooch will start a conversation with his neighbour's mutt and this adds a whole new dynamic to the experience. Visions of what could be done with a couple of poisoned steaks flash through the hapless insomniac's mind along with visions of shotguns and baseball bats. I could understand it if the dog was guarding a valuable property but nine times out of ten it turns out to be a derelict patch of land with two olive trees, a chicken and a broken down poly-tunnel …....there is nowt so queer as folk.
The sparrows on the camp sites are a delight, especially so as they have become much rarer in the UK in recent years. But these are no ordinary sparrows, these guys are about as switched on as a sparrow can be when it comes to life on a camp site. They can hear the rustle of the paper bag that you have just purchased your daily loaf of bread in from a considerable distance, and there will be at least 50 pairs of eyes looking up at you expectantly from the bottom of the van steps. We usually end up giving the birds some before we have had a go at it ourselves. And its no good offering them the stale stuff left over from the day before; they will eat it if they have to, but they much prefer fresh. We have also observed that the females are much more brave than the males and will come very close, but not brave enough to take food out of your hand. However I'm sure that if I persisted for a few days they would do this in the same way that robins do back home when I am out fishing.
Spanish starlings are also lovely company when you are sitting out on a sunny afternoon. They sing the same songs as in UK but they have learnt a much broader range of notes and spend much of their time indulging in what sounds like a conversation with each other. They also have a range of notes that sound more like they belong to a UK song thrush than a starling.
Just as we were cycling back to the camp late yesterday afternoon we saw a Hoopoo fly across the road in front of us, not rare here probably but quite an exotic sight for us. We have also seen lots of warblers in their winter quarters, but they are quite shy and it has not been possible to make positive identification. All the above added to the vultures we watched in the mountains is a good start for two amateur birders like us, I hope we see many more.
We up sticks and head off to Benicasim tomorrow which is only out 80 clicks down the road. Not exactly sure where we will be staying yet, but we want somewhere that will provide some sort of New Year celebration where we can have a few drinkies,

Things They Don't Put in the Manual #1.
In our compact 5.7mtr A/S Nuevo we don't have a fixed bed so we have to assemble the brute every night. This normally takes about 3 minutes sober, but can take up to half an hour if we have had a little drinkie. However it does not matter how warm and snug it has been in the van all evening as when we take the quilt out of the overhead locker it is the same temperature as a Polar Bears backside. This also holds true for our choice of clothing in the mornings which could best be described as “fresh” straight out of the locker. Good excuse for a cuddle though........................

When driving through Spanish towns they make ample use of pedestrian crossings the same as in the UK, however in Spain they sometimes like to incorporate a speed bump into the crossing as well. It is all to easy to fail to notice these speed bumps while trying to read road signs, watch out for traffic and having Sat Nav Sally squawking in ones ear to “do a u turn if possible” at the same time. The net affect of this is for everything in the lockers (and Mrs Tinca) to be temporarily airborne for a split second before returning to earth with a bump. I dont think our grill pan will ever be quite the same again, and we can always go back and pick up the bicycles.........

For the newbie there is quite a technique to be applied to using the shower block without mishap and this involves learning how to do the ”Shower Block Shuffle”. If you are lucky the shower cubicle will have a separate area for disrobing, however due to the shower head having been designed by somebody with an overdeveloped sense of humour the water will spray with considerable force in every direction thus soaking the floor in both the shower tray and the changing area. Now having dried oneself all over, with the exception of the feet due to said wet floor, one is faced with the tricky manoevre of standing on one wet foot while trying to pass the other one through ones pants without getting them wet. If a few drinkies have been consumed the night before this can be fraught with danger and if not careful one can be caught bunny hopping towards a door not designed to take a full on collision.

We are currently camped up in the mountains again near Xavia with wide vistas down to the sea and a good view of Mount Montgo. Its ACSI site #2523 (Vall de Laguar) and its very peaceful here with good opportunities for us to do some walking in the hills. The photo does not do justice to the current view from our van.
When we left you we were at Bonterra Park with Sue taking lessons in how to speak Essex. Mrs Tinca has mastered “leave it ahhhhhttttt ya cahh” but I am still struggling with “foivah” which apparently is a unit of currency.
We then went back on ourselves and up the coast to Alcossebre where we stayed for 2 days and a night with some Spanish friends in the garden of their house right on the beach. We rather liked Alcossebre as opposed to Benicassim as its smaller and more intimate so the next time we are here we will try out the local camp-site. Below is the view to the beach from the garden.
We then headed back down south to Castellon to spend 2 nights with another friend with the luxury of spending two nights in a “proper” bed; to be honest we are just as comfortable in our van but it was nice to be able to have a good hot soak in the shower without worrying about how much water we were using. We then went to an industrial estate just on the outskirts of Castellon where the company that Mrs Tinca worked for has a regional office, so she could catch up with old workmates. They treated us to a lovely lunch that went on until 16:30, when we finally said our goodbyes and headed on to Valencia. By the time we hit the city it was already dark and as it was the night before the 3 Kings the streets were very busy. Mrs Tinca was at the wheel virtually unaided (I had had a few drinkies during the meal so the navigation was a bit iffy) and she did a sterling job of getting us to the Coll Vert camp-site in order for us to find it was shut. We backtracked on the CV 500 and found an aire type site that was only 11 Euro a night with the best Wi-Fi we have encountered so far, so we decided to stay there for a few nights. The next day was spent biking around the Albufera National Park and looking at the wildlife and the rice fields as well as the massive central lake. We then bussed into Valencia on subsequent days to take in the Science and Oceanographic museums on day one and the city centre on day two. We found Valencia to be rather a mixture of things we did and did not like but overall we enjoyed the city and liked the general atmosphere of the place. If nothing else it demands a visit to see the futuristic architecture of the science museum and planetarium etc. and a pitcher of the local cocktail, Agua de Valencia, which contains freshly squeezed orange juice, gin, rum, and sugar – it tastes harmless enough until you try to start walking again.
It is also worth mentioning that with the exception of a light shower when we arrived at Bilbao we have not seen a drop of rain and almost every day has been unbroken sunshine with temperatures that would allow sunbathing for at least four hours a day on most days. We keep pinching ourselves to remind us that it really is January.
We will stay here for a few nights before making the relatively short hop down to the fleshpots of Benidorm to seek out some of the other Funsters holed up at Villasol …....and possibly Sue in her van Peggy.

Having now spent some time exploring the region around the Vall de Laguar camp-site we can heartily recommend it to those of you who like outstanding scenery and hill walking. We took the 12 kilometre walk up into the mountains today and the view from the top is absolutely outstanding. On one side you look down into the Vall de Laguar and the towns of Campell, Fleix and Benimaurell and the coast beyond, and on the other side you look down on the inland valley full of olive and citrus farms. If this kind of thing floats your boat then we would urge you to give the area a visit, but the walking is not for the faint hearted and suitable clothing and boots and emergency kit to deal with falls and twisted ankles should be carried as the going varies from loose scree to jagged rock. The camp-site also has very knowledgeable and friendly staff and the views from the site are wonderful to wake up to in the morning sunshine.
I think this morning we appreciated our motor-home more than at any time previously. Without this wonderful vehicle we would not have discovered this beautiful area let alone been able to stay here. When we open the curtains in the morning we are met with a vista that you would normally expect only from a 5 star hotel. We are also aware that we have joined a community that have discovered the same for themselves and are only too willing to share their own experiences, no wonder this site is called Motorhome FUN....

BENIDORM
After spending much of our time in Spain so far in small pueblo's or medium sized camp-sites near small coastal resorts Benidorm comes as quite a shock. Its a bit like thinking you are going to a Donny Osmond concert only to find out its AC/DC instead. Benidorm comes with a ready made reputation and its true that beer, bingo, British pubs and fish 'n chips are readily available. However there is much more to the place and the beach and weather have been outstanding and there is also good walking on the headland. It cannot be denied that it also offers excellent value for money with many outlets competing for the winter trade market. Basically whatever you want then you will find it somewhere in Benidorm so it is easy to understand why so many Brits choose to overwinter here without going anywhere else – its good fun and lots to do. We also popped into Villasol Campsite and we were able to wish Theonlysue bon voyage and meet Brisey and Pamelaaaaaar for the first and hopefully not the last time. Also a special mention to Andy, Mark and Archie the dog, who were our neighbours and good company on the Armanello site next to Villasol, for giving us so much useful information on Benidorm. We are unable to load photos at the moment because the Wi-Fi is next to useless for much of the day, but we will try and put that right when we get to our next stop which will be La Manga del Mar if all goes to plan.
Just one afterthought, you may be familiar with mobility scooters in the UK but believe me you 'aint seen nothing until you get to Benidorm. Sure, they have your bog standard single seater but they also have tandem long wheel base jobbies with engines by McLaren. These are not for the disabled as far as we can see but seem to be used more by the bone idle. What they should do is re-market them as Booze Buggies for those customers that are too legless to get from one pub to the next.

After spending much of our time in Spain so far in small pueblo's or medium sized camp-sites near small coastal resorts Benidorm comes as quite a shock. Its a bit like thinking you are going to a Donny Osmond concert only to find out its AC/DC instead. Benidorm comes with a ready made reputation and its true that beer, bingo, British pubs and fish 'n chips are readily available. However there is much more to the place and the beach and weather have been outstanding and there is also good walking on the headland. It cannot be denied that it also offers excellent value for money with many outlets competing for the winter trade market. Basically whatever you want then you will find it somewhere in Benidorm so it is easy to understand why so many Brits choose to overwinter here without going anywhere else – its good fun and lots to do. We also popped into Villasol Campsite and we were able to wish Theonlysue bon voyage and meet Brisey and Pamelaaaaaar for the first and hopefully not the last time. Also a special mention to Andy, Mark and Archie the dog, who were our neighbours and good company on the Armanello site next to Villasol, for giving us so much useful information on Benidorm. We are unable to load photos at the moment because the Wi-Fi is next to useless for much of the day, but we will try and put that right when we get to our next stop which will be La Manga del Mar if all goes to plan.
Just one afterthought, you may be familiar with mobility scooters in the UK but believe me you 'aint seen nothing until you get to Benidorm. Sure, they have your bog standard single seater but they also have tandem long wheel base jobbies with engines by McLaren. These are not for the disabled as far as we can see but seem to be used more by the bone idle. What they should do is re-market them as Booze Buggies for those customers that are too legless to get from one pub to the next.

Last night we had the pleasure of joining several other Funsters from Villasol for a double birthday celebration which consisted of a Chinese meal followed by a few beers in the Tropical bar. We were made to feel very welcome and a big thank you to everybody and we are sorry we cannot remember all the names and on line names. We had a great night out and look forward to meeting you all again at one of the rallies if we do not bump into you again before then.

Lots of funsters on Villasol, we all had a fab night last night with a double birthday celebration you would have been welcome to join in , we are on pitch 418 funster sticker in window come and say hello
