Timing belt replacement cost

Put it this way unlike a good wine Oil dont get better with age
Respectfully suggest its placed at the top of your things to do list.
diesel fumes mixed with oil can get acidic

Bugger, I've only done 4,000 miles since we got the van, The last time the oil was probably changed was by brownhills back in Jan 2017 on a major service 5,000 miles ago by the previous owner. I bet my mates in reading didn't change it, will it have deteriorated in that period of time on those miles.?

Thanks for the reply by the way (y)
Ideally you want to change it once a year ..
Will it have done any harm ....most likely not

But I'd have an oil and filter change done

Main Ford and Fiat agent in central Kent for 2013 Ducato cambelt, 2 aux belts and water-pump change. £1431.47 plus VAT !

When I asked if that was their best price I was advised that it’s a very intensive and intricate job by the lady receptionist in a take or leave it tone.
The labour was 981 quid. Yeah, OK I was not up to doing the job myself but stroll-on, well over the top in my estimation.

Done locally for £500.

that seems a good price is it with a dealer
no it’s a small workshop that I have used for years that I trust
he does our cars van and trike
I dare say there will be a little extra on service but they always confirm it’s ok first
i do get a good discount though as he and his wife have become friends with motorhome and trikes and bikes

not bad for around 5 hours work around £195 per hour :mask:

Right to sum up
Had one price of a main dealer for over £1,300
Another main dealer has told me i do not need a belt until 8 years old ( which i now no is wrong)
Just had a price of a smaller garage cbcars in leicester as follows mot £45 full service £180 belt change £260 all + vat excluding water pump not sure why seems very cheep compared to others
All these price differences are about what is actually fitted, is it just the belt, if so which one, quality? Is it the full kit inc water pump as recommended by Fiat, Genuine Fiat Kit or aftermarket kit.
Some aftermarket kit will be rubbish, do you want to trust it? some as good as the original.
The trouble is when we ask for a cam belt replacement, some will quote for just that with a cheap belt and some for a full quality kit.
We had ours done by a FP dealer and paid £360+vat just for the kit, next time it’ll be a Gates kit, about £150 inc vat fitted by an independent.
Last year cost us £1040 for everything inc MOT at the FP dealer, this has just cost us £90 for oil/filter, check over and MOT at an independent (Hull Van Centre)

The problem with the main dealer parts pricing is that the contents in the box with their name on it are made by someone else.
Gates Corporation, Fenner and ContiTech are all OEM suppliers yet their direct supply cost is usually less than half of the main dealer and still have full warranty

Very true, but there’s a lot of rubbish out there too and it’s very difficult to know exactly what parts someone is quoting for.

You can rest assured a bona fide garage wont touch the cheap crap those dont come with a labour warranty as does the oe or better, motor factors stuff.
Yes nation wide trade factors guarantee oe or better parts and pay garage labour when stuff is faulty

Just confirm that it’s Gates and there will be a sticker that should be fitted to show the date and mileage of fitment so you know it’s genuine

Its kind of the same as the diesel filter housings for fiat ....only one company makes them £69 on ebay ...fiat main dealer £289

The useless mechanic that did the service on my frankia in 2017 broke mine removing it ...claimed it was broken already and replaced it without asking beforehand and then charged me the fist dealer price but refused to show me an invoice for it.

I have a distrust of mechanics and garages in general as I served my apprenticeship in them so im aware of the goings on .

Its like currently working in fast food industry .....if you told people the stuff you see they would never eat takeaway again lol

Am I right in presuming its a Ford base vehicle?
If its a Peugeot/ Citroen or Fiat, PM me your reg number and I will get you a fixed cost from our relevant dealerships.....

Price depends on parts type ,local garage £425 or £530 for belt and pump on a 250/290 you can get cheap parts and copy parts I pay the extra as I cannot afford the risk.

Buy genuine parts and take them to your local trusted garage.

This has been done to death on here, it's a very subjective subject, depending on where you live, what type of vehicle you have (a/b class/camper) and what is fitted.

So asking how much anyone paid is pretty much useless unless you know all of the above. Then there are those who get the job done for 99p.
