Timing belt question

Hi All,

Just bought an older Hymer. Timing belt was changed 12/2018, done 18K miles since then. Should I do the timing belt. Not exactly flush with the old cashola right now so wondering is this really neccessary? On time one would say yes, maybe, but 18K miles!?
 
If it was me I'd change as per manual, if it goes it'll be a substantial amount more than the cost of a timing belt. If you risk it by not doing it it'll always be in the back of your mind.

I’d change the belt, and not the water pump in your situation. Cheaper and easier.

Belts age even when the engine is not being used. There are 5/6 bends in the belt that leave parts of it permanently stressed when the engine is not running, particularly around the tightest bends. This is why manufacturers give time limits as well as mileage limits for replacement.

I’ve posted before, from a Skoda Yeti. In for its belt change and just in time. It was still actually running, but probably not for much longer. I know you said about the squiddlies, but it’s a game of Russian roulette, with hundreds versus thousands. Do you feel lucky.

Which engine do you have, the 2.8Hdi is not too hard to do yourself. Buy the kit mailorder from Coastal Motorhomes, Ringwood, belt and the two idler pulleys. No need to change the waterpump. The 2.8Hdi is easier than the earlier engines as no need to 'time' the hi-pressure fuel pump.

Definitely. To my expense I put the job off doing on a VW 2.5 we had just purchased years ago for the same reason. Major cost!!! Flag up roughly where your located and others will post up reliable independent garages that operate on lower margins but still offer a reliable service.

Thanks everyone, I'm convinced!
Same engine as I have. It’s due a belt next year so I have got quotes from my local garage that I trust. £400 without water pump. £1400 with water pump.
Water pump is part of the engine mount so lots more bits to come off.
I know the belt was done in 2021 but have no idea on pump.
So I’m leaning towards the pump as well.
It’s a 2001 a class with 90k plus on clock.
Van is in excellent nick & passes mot with no trouble. I will try a few other garages for lower price but it’s a cost I’m prepared to pay.

I just had mine done by Caravan & Campers (The Motorhome Man on YouTube / Jason ) had all Belts replaced + Water Pump £630 ....Fiat Ducato 2.3 There located at Wem.
Edit: Forgot to say Van is 2019 14000 mls now ,we purchased last yr with no paperwork to say it had been done so as said better b safe.👍

Is it an 'interference engine'? (Are all diesels interference engines?)

Anyway, if it's non-interference, the pistons won't hit valves if the belt slips or snaps but you may still be stuck at the roadside because the engine won't run without it.

I would change the timing belt now.

Oh it will be, and major eye watering damage is the outcome, always.
