Time to upgrade our dinner service

We've got lots of bamboo stuff. Nice and light weight, doesn't rattle as much and good for the planet. However, it's more brittle than plastic. I've shattered a mug by dropping it a relatively short distance. And it stains very easily. The insides of our mugs are coffee brown. Our blue plates are green from chorizo and turmeric. Using an abrasive takes the surface off.

I have the cheap white dinner set from IKEA mentioned above with a link by GJH. Easy to replace if I break anything and I don't mind the weight as they don't weigh much really compared to dome dining sets. I like to have things that can go in the microwave and don't mind a knife being used on them and not leave marks on the plates / bowels. Cutlery I also got from Ikea, again easy to replace if I lose any. you have probably purchased what you wanted by now, but I thought I would share.
The only person who will be going anywhere near my bowels with a knife will be a surgeon; and I shall ask if it's sharp .... ;) ;)

Take a look at ‘biobu’ bamboo plates etc. They are very hard wearing, as light as melamine and far better for the planet.
Bamboo crockery has been banned in some European countries as being unsafe due to toxins in the glues used in their manufacture, which can leech out when used with hot foods. I personally would avoid buying bamboo plates or cups for my van, and I've stopped using the bamboo travel cup I have.

I carried 'camping' crockery for ages, but have just switched to using standard plates and dishes. I've always used regular cutlery, mugs and glasses.

During one of my make the payload lighter moments we bought a Corelle set which was tons lighter than what we had. It’s since been supplemented with some of the Ikea white stuff. If I’d seen the Ikea first we might have saved ourselves a good few pounds.

sorry dyslexia, if i don't have a red line underneath i dont know its wrong...lol
One of the Rules is not to correct errors of grammar, syntax or spelling, but there are some typos that scream out for a smart a*se comment [nearly 59 years since I was first smacked around the back of my head by Reggie Morgan, our Class Teacher [who was Welsh!] for making such a comment, and I've never learned to desist ...

Same here. We bought Corelle because of recommendations on here and my daughter who lives in the USA uses it. From memory the Corelle set was about £45 to £50. At that time I don't think Ikea was selling an equivalent. If it did we would have bought the equivalent in Ikea and it would have cost us less than a tenner. And we too have supplemented our Corelle with some from Ikea.

Then you understand my plight, dyslexic and Welsh speaking educated. I have no hope when it comes to spelling... lol i don't mind people correcting me, but they also have to understand i will never get better at it.

I understand it.

Smart arses think they are being funny, but they put people off posting, just for a cheap laugh, which is why mentioning grammar or spelling here is outlawed. Please don't be worried about it, no one here is. Thanks for posting. (y)

Reggie used to get his own back by hauling me and another Steve [both of us totally tone deaf] out at the front of the class in Music Lessonss to 'sing' a Dutch Harvest song, that has a chorus line that repeats 3 times, in ever higher key 'Is shining, is shining, is shiiiiiiiniiiiiing' about 3 octaves above what we might have been able to cope with. 29 fellow pupils weeing themselves with laughter at our caterwauling!

I bloody dreaded and hated Thursday afternoons in Junior School.

I'm willing to bet that you'll learn to cope with dyslexia long before I manage to sing in even a 'still hopelessly tuneless' fashion [and this would count as an improvement!]

Watching this thread with interest as we have just upgraded our cheap cutlery set which came with the van to (some of) a silver service set which I was left by an Aunt. Now we need to change to posh crockery to match it. Ideally not £500 though.

Bamboo Wood fibre and melamine mix see below

Very safe, dishwasher safe and long lasting as well as very light.

Some of the crockery I use in the motorhome is over 100 years old, Mason’s Ironstone. I took them from my main dinner service in the house. They tend to be the pieces that are scuffed or slightly chipped. My husband still insists on eating his muesli from a Royal Doulton Bunnykins bowl. My wine glasses are lead crystal in different patterns and all bought in charity shops for pennies. They all rattle around in the cupboards without any protection and I haven’t had a breakage in 20 years.

Corelle for us. We bought the Iris set - 4 each of dinner plates, small plates and bowls and mugs. We bought them for £80 at a show somewhere. Since then I’ve bought 2 more of each online to make it 6 of everything. We’ve had them for about 6 years.

Apart from using china mugs we're still using the Melaware plates and bowls we bought to go to Norway in 1978. If it ain't broke . . .
... it soon will be [to complete your last sentence; or maybe it's just clumsy/butter fingers me who does the slow mo juggling attempt to regain grip but knowing that in 1.5 seconds there will be a sound effect confirming that my hope was misplaced ... ]

Old melamine was looking tired looked at bamboo but it felt cheap then came across a new set at one of the shows on the bunner stand it has been first class and they do everything it should including having a rubber ring on the base to stop it rattling

Used to have melamine set but changed to correlle set bought in the states for $20! So cheap over there but it was about 7 years ago! Also got bamboo but noticed it stains really easily. Bought two metal plates to try out as well. Got China mugs and plastic glasses so quite a mix!

Corelle, but proper Edinburgh crystal whisky glasses...

Just read through this thread and was amused by the intermix if serious replies and p*ss taking.

My serious/p*ss-taking reply is we only have proper crockery and glass in our MH..

Even on the boat the glasses were glass(heavy-bottomed - like my women(not), with non-slip coasters.

Glasses in the boat were and in the MH non-crystal, just in case. Unlike at home, which are lead crystal, but then crystal is cheap in Poland.

Best Regards
