Hi funsters. We are currently in the loire valley enjoying the heat (35c today) but have a bit of a problem. Having wound the awning out for some shade I now cannot remove the winding handle! We have a 2016 Bailey 540 with a Thule awning supplied by Rose Awnings. its done it once before but I managed to wiggle it free. Any ideas please as to dismantling or fixing before I borrow a hacksaw and buy anything other than a Bailey?

Thank god for that, my next suggestion was 2kg of Semtex and ear muffs… glad it worked..
Just bookmarked those instructions as well , got a Thule on our new van and will be using it for the first time today ! Many thanks !

Fatal on nylon and some other plastics, makes nylon swell, many a Motorhome step and door hinges ruined by WD40.
Agreed…WD40 has some lubricants in it but it is a multipurpose spray that degreases, penetrates, cleans etc and doesn‘t really contain enough lubricant for that job. It does a lot of things ok, but isnt great at any one thing
If you’re looking to lubricate something, get a proper lubricant 👍

I asked why not... as far as I am aware, the gears are not made of clear polystyrene or polycarbonate .. but to be on the safe side I did say >>>

"silicone spray is good on plastic and rubber components"

There a legions of myths and stories about WD40 swirling on the net.. most just nonsense ..

I aways refer to technical facts with any product ..

TECHNICAL FAQS What does WD-40 contain?

While the ingredients in WD-40 are secret, we can tell you what WD-40 does NOT contain. WD-40 does not contain silicone, kerosene, water, wax, graphite, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), or any known cancer-causing agents.

What is the shelf-life of WD-40?
Indefinite. While some products may have an expiration date, WD-40 lasts so long that a "use by" date isn't necessary.

How long does WD-40 last after application?
While this may vary depending on the application, WD-40 remains effective even after it appears to dry. The corrosion and rust protection ingredients will remain adhered to the surface. For external or extreme conditions you may need to apply more WD-40 to ensure maximum protection.

What surfaces or materials are OK to use WD-40 on?
WD-40 can be used on just about everything. It is safe for metal, rubber, wood and plastic. WD-40 can be applied to painted metal surfaces without harming the paint. Polycarbonate and clear polystyrene plastic are among the few surfaces on which to avoid using a petroleum-based product like WD-40.

What happens if I get WD-40 on my skin or in my eyes?
If you accidentally spray WD-40 onto your skin, wash copiously with soap and water. If any gets into your eyes, irrigate thoroughly with water as soon as possible for at least 15 minutes. For more information, download our Material Safety Data Sheet for WD-40.

What is the propellant in WD-40?
The propellant helps pump WD-40 out of the can effectively. The propellant used in WD-40 is carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is an inert gas which helps empty the can. Plus, the addition of CO2 reduces the number of VOCs, which helps towards preserving the environment. Be sure to point the spray nozzle toward the blue dot marked on the top of the can, this will ensure that the can empties more effectively.

Is WD-40 carcinogenic?
WD-40 does not contain any known cancer-causing ingredients

Not helped when it became a brand name, they make a whole range of products under the WD40 name, including silicone spray 🤔

I buy a different brand to minimise my confusion 👍

Not helped by the fact that nearly every comment that is posted about wd40 and plastics are repeating the same comment, often with a little bit of science thrown in, it is as if someone said it once and it has been repeated so often it has become a fact, an urban myth.

Agreed with the bit about plastics … but would still suggest it isn’t a good lubricant .. but it’s better than nothing

I aways used to struggle with the Thule handle but the on E we have now has a label on the handle nwith instruction. It's a doddle when you know the correct way to use it.

why not ?

silicone spray is good on plastic and rubber components

WD will free off seized mechanical parts, lubricates and will also clean off dirt

Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.

Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.
Fatal on nylon and some other plastics, makes nylon swell, many a Motorhome step and door hinges ruined by WD40.
That’s why not👍

How do you know?
I heard it from a cousin who heard it from his best friends uncle who had picked it up down the pub, so it must be true. Being serious for a moment, my awning winding handle told me.(y)
