Very depressing..
We are thinking of selling our IH Motorhome… it’s simply time to move on, but we have been told that, although prices went up after covid, they are now dropping like a stone. The market is weak because the future is so uncertain
What does everyone think? Is this your experience?

The proverbial cleft stick ?

A couple of months ago we were looking to sell, but received silly offers from various dealers.

Even though the offers were low; for the time of year, and the age of the van they could have been worse.

I was prepared to bite the bullet, but SWMBO was not.

Guess who won that argument ?

Let's wait till spring, she said.

In the meantime various things failed, broke, packed up, gave way or just simply wore out.

Funds were expended, and now that all is fettled, I am thinking that it is time to sell, but now SWMBO, says that having spent so much on the bloody thing we should keep it a bit longer.

. . . . . . . . meanwhile I am struggling to get insurance quotes, having passed the magical age of 80.

Owning a motorhome is rich man's game, and I am beginning to think I am no longer in the required fiscal category ?

Depends a bit on how much your van is worth, I am very close to your position 78 in a couple of weeks, but our van is only worth 10 grand at the very best and had it over 10 years so doesn't owe me a penny apart from the new gearbox in France last year so I have no intention of ever selling it.

I might get £22/24k from a dealer, but they would put in the forecourt for over £30k.

I have to admit that we are using it less and less, BUT without it, my missus would be pretty much house-bound ?

There will come a point when the cost of maintenance, insurance, and road tax will force my hand.

Mind you,I suppose that I might as well spend the money on the motorhome, as give it to Rachel-from-accounts, eh ?

Food for thought, maybe ?

I have my Motorhome up for sale on Autotrader. Sales of second hand motorhomes peak March-May and I am now seeing an increase in the number of viewings being done each day. Beware of the scammers there everywhere trying all sorts of tricks. Most of mine have an Irish accent so far.

We’ve just got back from a weeks trip in the UK and couldn’t believe the number of MH’s on the roads and the couple of sites we stayed on. Whilst we saw the odd elder MH (some of which were cared for a lot more than some of the newer ones) the majority were less than 2 years old (we felt quite inadequate in our 19 plate Adria) which demonstrates there still a massive love of motorhoming, which must feed through to prices both new and pre-used.

At the end of the day like everything else, price comes down to whatever people are willing to pay.

Most coachbuilders have just raised their MY25 prices by upto £3k, this will be reflected in the sale or PX price of preloved. Look around their stock and see how many models with similar floorplans they have... if it's only one or two you'll be offered more.

Same goes for it's weight. Many, many dealers no longer really want heavy motorhomes. The market for 3650kg and above is dwindling rapidly - punters with C1 now account for only 21% of U.K. drivers. We're now at the point were many dealers aren't even ordering heavier models for 2025 and coachbuilders are really cutting down their vehicle choices in the 3500kg + segment.

There's a lot of discussion on another thread about rasing 'B' licences to 4250kg, fair enough but most builders jump from 3500kg to 4500kg so they'll still be out of reach for most. This will still have a negative effect on prices if you turn up wanting to sell your Adria Supersonic.

Those looking to sell must do the leg work as dealer purchase prices vary quite dramatically across the country. We're PXing our 2020 At F Line and have been quoted from £29k - £45k, we paid £54k new. The latter is from a dealer in Somerset who has a preloved moho we fancy, it maybe a long drive from Yorkshire but guess where we'll be going? The 5000kg tag A Class has been sitting on their forecourt since October, I plan on leaving it another month... It'll still be there and I'll probably be able to negotiate the price down as they'll want it gone.

Not good to hear about scammers so please let us know what they try to do so others won't get caught out.

Sold my Hymer B544 2012 last October, it on forecourt at what we got for it. It originally went on forecourt at my p/x plus £5000, which i thought reasonable. With2 registration changes since they would have been forced to drop the price.

Sold ours recently.
Thought i would check the dealer who we sold it to.
It's on their forecourt now with a mark up of £11,995.
Not greedy are they.
Hope the flippin things blows up like our first Bailey.
If they've got many like a few posts before where they have had to reduce them a few times on average they might not be greedy just making a profit where they can to average out with the losers.

I doubt it'll be the reg number changes that have made them drop the price there's just not the same demand as a year or two ago

£12k mark up leaves a lot of room for some discounts leaving them still with a very healthy margin.

I'm not bothered, done it myself in the past many times.
In fact i would have paid someone to take the heap of shit off my hands.;)

I would be surprised if any dealer ever sets out to make less than £10,000 on a sale, the flippin thing might blow up

Dealer put my Hymer up for £3k more than he gave me for it.
My mates Carthago dealer put it up for 7K more than he gave my mate then after a couple of weeks dropped it to £2k more
than he paid.

I think generally they put a % on the value. Obviously a £25k van would be marked up a lot less than a £125k van

Mine was trader at £67K and he put it up for £70k, Mates traded at £85k. He probably made getting on for £20k on each of the new vans he sold us. Worked OK for us as this was last year & we had a fixed price deal at 2022 prices.

The last dealer we bought from sold the part ex within a week. The windscreen price was £2k more than the trade in. Not sure where his profit was as the new van we bought was below list plus there were loads of factory and dealer fitted extras included.

When my parents part ex the dealer was quiet honest said he would not put it on the forecourt it would go to trade during to the age

Where it went and for how much no-one cared as my parents were happy with the deal and the van

I really can’t understand why people seem to get upset that dealers try to re sell the motorhome at more money.
Surely you buy at wholesale prices and sell at retail?
I'm far from upset, in fact i'm overjoyed the dealer took it off my hands.

Are you sure they weren’t Brits looking for Irish passports?
