You can go one either side of your allotted time on a standard ticket , which is what we normally do, think we have done 16 crossings this year, so that soon adds up , i just pay the extra if i need to . That said my schedule is pretty fixed, always know when i am travelling , amd on the last trip i had a day off when i got back , so flexi'd it in case i wanted to stay and come home a day later. For £20 extra you can buy flexi ticket with DFDS that allows you to roll into the terminal any time within a 72 hour window and get on the next ferry. No stress when delayed in traffic, no overnighting in noisy port towns just cross the Chanel when it suits.
It seems wierd though, we can leave to come back at 7pm, hit the 10pm boat (just) and then land, and be off for 11.30, and home for 3am, which gives us 4 hours sleep , but when we stayed over , we left at 10am , made the 2pm more by luck than judgement and then caught all the traffic all the way back and arrived home at 7pm. A day just vanishes.
