Thieving Toerags

Someone was bemoaning their non-working fridge on a motorhome facebook group I'm on. That they were cancelling their trip, etc.

They hugely upset/offended that I suggested buying/borrowing a coolbox. I even offered to lend them mine.

Over 20-odd years of caravaning and motorhoming, things go wrong from time to time. I have some plastic sheet and sticky tape, a small toolbox and a credit card. If you're determined, there's usually a way of keeping going. I even had to hire a car on one holiday, and have a slightly longer than planned stay whilst a turbo was replaced.

Exactly, it's simply life, sometimes things go wrong but cancelling trips when you can adapt easily is daft.
like yourself I have a small bag of tools, spares and duct tape, whats plastic sheet for though?

In case a skylight or similar get damaged and the van needs to be made watertight.

I lost a side window (to a stone) on my 4x4 once, and had no way of sealing it up.

ahhhh, good thinking. Think I'll get some then.

Well, yes. We travelled 3000 miles in France/Spain without a properly working fridge. However, I wasn't going to let it spoil our trip. It was still a lot easier than my old memories of camping in a tent with no electricity at all

We have booked our new van (when it arrives) with a growler and non starter. I was wondering if it was worth the drive from County Durham to Devon. Clearly it is. Terrible thievery about!
surprised you cannot get that work done locally.

what work? Fitting a growler and non starter? Vanbitz do the installation, it's their equipment.
I assumed they would have agents if they were the manufacturer, Maybe missing an opportunity.

When you have a system like that being fitted, you want guys on it who know exactly how to do it and take pride in doing it exactly. That's Eddie and the Vanbitz team. Agents might not be so fastidious.

We travelled back from Spain to have ours done and would do the same again in future, if we ever change our motorhome. :)

When Eddie's son James moved to John's Cross I was hoping he might have started doing installation work as our drive from Poland to UK (1,000 miles) for MOT was long enough, without having to go to Vanbitz and back in our limited time.

As it turned out John's Cross was sold. Also in Poland our RHD 'A' Class if stolen would stand out like the proverbial sore thumb and would not fit in a container, so we are less vulnerable than most - I hope.

I agree with a decision not to use agents for highly technical work. Just look at some of the complaints about dealers' work in UK for some high-end Continental MH manufacturers.

Am meant to collect my new (to me) van on Saturday and the dealer has emailed me today to say that some toe rags tried to steal vans off him last night. Mine being one of them :mad:

The door lock barrel and ignition barrel having been taken out. I presume they must have also taken them.

Whilst the lock barrel is easily replaced, the ignition barrel has to come from Italy, with a 2 to 3 week delivery.

Totally messed up my plans now and could also be very much out of pocket if I cant get away as planned on 8th June.

Have informed him I dont want a whole load of diferent keys neither.
Having had to replace my locks due to key theft don’t worry too much Fiat can provide the dealer with a new set including the locks as a ‘kit’. I assume for a manufacturer it’s a common request

i thought it might be for wrapping the bodies, after catching "gentlemen" attempting to borrow the motorhome

That’s what I believe is happening. Hopefully so I can collect it before the 8th

If anyone came near my MH,they would have their own parking bay in the nearest hospital,,

That's exactly what you do want , a professional thief uses the door lock which has no pick protection to clone a makeshift key to start the van , if the door locks are different to the ignition it slows them down or possibly throws them so they dont take it.

A guy on another forum repairs ECUs , he was given a cloning box to repair and was astounded how easy it was to steal a ducato , first thing he did was change the door locks on his motorhome

Excellent our local Fiat professional also took the van into ‘safe storage’ whilst awaiting the key and lock set so if those have been ordered up you won’t have any issues. ✅
