The Infamous Rouen Tunnel

Must admit I did not see which round the arrows pointed, and doubt very much indeed that I would have seen that nuance. Now I know I'll look out for it.

YES!. I came so close to shredding my roof in Rouen myself. I had to reverse some 100 metres to get out of the tunnel, whilst my travelling companion directed the traffic round me. The French themselves just raised their eyebrows as if to say "Oh, yet another one".

Look at it again, the left one has a 2.6m height restriction, the right one is showing it is for all traffic over 2.6m as the little black arrows are the other way round. It makes perfect sense to me.

Those arrows are too little to be seen from any distance but the blue background is a better clue.

Something which may seem obvious but may confuse some is that 2.6 mtrs = 2mtrs 60cm not 2 mtrs 6cm so if you entered the latter in as your height in your satnav you could come unstuck.

I’m sure the French version of the Highway Code is available with English meanings. When I drove across eu for a living with trucks and buses pre sat nav days, road atlases had all the signs for Europe on a separate page. A large number of the signs are common through the EU.

From Highway Code:

"Signs with red circles are mostly prohibitive. "
In this case: no vehicles over 2.6 metres in this lane.

"Signs with blue [background] but no red border mostly give positive instruction."
In this case: vehicles over 2.6 metres use this lane.

I don't think there are many data sources for satnavs and most seem to use Here maps.
If you're not paying for updates, I wouldn't expect the quality of the data to be very good.
Every one that I've used has provided poor directions at some time or other, and none of them were cheap versions.
I've not fallen foul of the Rouen tunnels (yet), but that may be luck more than judgement.

If in no rush and just want to bimble along is bimble really a word? Google maps shows this route on D roads miles away from the low tunnel.

The overnight ferry allows approx 3-4 hours sleep
About 2 hours is more like it, have to queue up to get the cabin key and there is always a French person in front of you with a problem. Then they wake you up and want you out of the cabin an hour before they dock.
