The ferry to France is way less than half the cost of the ferry to the Isle of Wight!

Working over there in late 80s building the Newport bypass and it was expensive then as a door passengeršŸ˜³šŸ˜³seems nothing has changedā˜¹ļøā˜¹ļø

Saying that my sister went over with her grandchildren for 3 days recently and said the car ferry was rammed on both journeys so all the time they keep loading them up they wonā€™t be dropping prices!!
so true, unless they agree to building a bridge its never going to change and for me that's not going to happen in my lifetime as last time it was stopped by the council members. Same old arguments as the last 20 years just rinse and repeat, the island is slowly becoming an old people's home as its too expensive for business's to start up due to the crossing costs. People from places like London buy 2nd homes here and then only use them a few times a year as they are of course a lot cheaper than most places, the discussion could go on and on with pro's and con's.
All in all it is a very scenic place but also a very expensive place to get to and from and not a good place to work due to low wages and very little in the way of major companies.

It could be worse. You could be trying to get to France from Ireland.
I am currently looking at our options for next summer.
Travelling directly from Ireland (Stenaline) - 7M motorhome, 2 adults, 1 dog including a pet friendly cabin both ways -

Well that is a Flexi fare and a 4-berth cabin for two, but maybe the pet cabins are all 4-berth.

What would it be for a non-pet 2-berth and non-Flexi?

Presumably it's no less costly (but inconvenient) to travel to England first and then on to France?

Living only 20 miles from a South coast port I always feel a deal of sympathy for folk who have to drive hundreds of miles to cross to France from oop North or Scotland. Probably an even more tedious drive home after a trip. :(

I remember watching a Benny Hill sketch where he's at a customs desk and the officer asks him where he has been, to which he replied "Overseas". The custom's officer asks "Where specifically overseas ?" to which Benny replies "The Isle of Wight". The officer retorts " The IoW isn't 'overseas'" to which Benny replies "Well you try walking there !"

So our four ferries seem cheap.

7m MH. 2 persons

Ancona-Patras return, 'camping on board'

Piraeus-Patmos return, cabin on return. Discount 30% because same ferry company.

Total distance 1290 nautical miles(2.400km). Total cost ā‚¬900 (Ā£782)

If you were charged at the Gosport ferry foot passenger rate of Ā£4.80 return for a 500 metre trip, you'd have to add another nought on.

Went for a week in September (that bloody gorgeous sunny week) but won't be going back.

It finally started to rain as we left and everyone was sat inside on the Lymington Ferry, bloomin packed out. Gave me Covid! First time as well šŸ¤’

I was thinking of going to the Isle of Wight.
To the Isle of Wight: a 70 mile drive to the port for ferry at Ā£271 return.
To France: a 20 mile drive to the port for ferry at Ā£105 return (Ā£131 less 20% wrinkly discount).
 Little wonder I'll be going to France (as usual) and pocketing the saving of 166 quid for Moules and St Emilion.

Hi,
I live on the Island and have to pay extortionate rates every time we travel.
We tend to use Wightlink and book via the Camping and Caravan club which gives you a 50% discount, but you can only do this online.
Alternatively, many campsites here do discounted ferry travel included in their booking system.
Hope this helps.
Regards Dibby.

I've been to the IoW about 2,000 times on the car ferries, loved them and it never cost me a penny, in fact they used to give me money for doing it.

Okay, I was Chief Engineer on the Red Eagle and then Engineering Manager for 10 years

They might have been able to fix the problem a bit sooner at Marquis Motorhomes, Southampton.

If you go from Portsmouth you get 50% off. I live there and pay about Ā£140 each time.

There must be better deals? We went in early September at reasonable hours from Portsmouth to Fishbourne (3.7t and 7.5m) for Ā£135 return

Your loss.

Not at all. Been to Isle of Wight many times over the last 50 years and no doubt will do so more in the future. Enjoyed its great music festival many times too. But clearly a historic country of 551,695 kmĀ² with a wide variety of landscapes, cities, towns, climates, culture, food, art, etc etc is going to be more interesting than a small English island of just 380.7 kmĀ².

Have been to the IOW hundreds of times but could count on one hand the number of times I've actually paid. Not that I dodge the ticket collectors; it's a lovely short crossing in a sea kayak.

I can see the IOW from our house and we used to go every year for 2 weeks when tugging. This was when our 2 girls was school age. We loved it over there. One year we had a change and went to Newquay. Booked and paid 2 weeks at monkey something camp site. Arrived Saturday morning, left on Monday night. Place was f----_@ng awful. Filthy and the last straw was a fully naked man walking around Newquay town at 10am. We went back to the site, had a think, packed up and drove to the ferry. Spent the next 2 weeks on the island.
Now with the CAZ in pompey and the exorbitant ferry price we no longer bother.

You pay's your money & takes your chance !! Do the planning & the sums as to what & where you go ,in your own space in your own time .
Thats the beauty of Mo-Hos.Having said that ,,MANY French/Spanish/Italian/German trips since early 70s ,i STILL go to I.o.W three or four times a year. If you want to do it ,DO IT !!
Booking through a site associated with 'Red Funnel' ( mostly " Waverly Park" East Cowes ) this Christmas to New Year ,10days overall cost Ā£306.00.Alright it's out of season, BUT,that's ferry both ways ( Ā£141), (including " Signature Lounge " ,site pitch e.t,c .
As I SAY ",you pay's your money & takes your choice "

A mate of mine from the sailing club used to go to Waverley Park with his caravan every Cowes Week. I never understood why he didn't go in his Westerly yacht.

If you book your crossing via one of the Campsites on the Isle of Wight, then you get special rates and will save $$$$.

We went this Easter - stayed at Appuldurcombe Gardens which was a good base for Ventnor & Shanklin, then Grange Farm which was great for exploring the whole area from Brighstone up to the Needles.
Ferry costs similar to the France costs you put above

You should go; it's well worth the visit

Think if you are a resident on ā€œThe Pile Of Shiteā€
Well that's not a very nice way to describe the wonderful place we live on, but if you are going to insult it please get it right " The Wonderful Isle of Sh1te" :ROFLMAO::drinks:
