The Dreaded C1 ..... Again!!

Thanks PeteH , only a bit concerned because I read somewhere on the forum of people losing their C1 and then having problems getting it back.

Mickey.

I don't think so, I was remembering this post from PeteH and others too

When I turned 70. I let all mine go, including C1. However after about a year, we sold the caravan and bought a Motorhome again, Needing more payload I upgraded. So had to re apply for my C1. they sent me the form D4 which my Doctor filled in. sent back the (B1 only) licence and got the C1 on a new licence. They have it on record, and you do not have the re-take a test or anything, It`s paper exercise plus Medical and Sight Test.

well that’s good to know then as I’m in the same position as the OP. Thanks for that

I have been told that the position would be the same for full HGV. However you have to do "Driver CPC" as well?.

When my class 1 HGV lapsed I was told I’d have to retake the test and that is the same for any category that is “lost” or “lapsed”. Very confusing!

I was out in Spain, Circa 2005. There was a guy who had had a big Winnebago parked up a La Manga for 2 full seasons. He wanted it back in the UK. In order to do it he had to return to the UK for a medical and get the DVLA to reinstate his HGV. (not just C1). He then drove it to Santander, and on arrival UK put it into a Garage for MOT. (I actually think it went to Dudleys Near Oxford) before driving it Home. I dont think the rules have changed, I got my C1 reinstated with no problems.

Its a big choice I have to renew mine soon lets hope they give a 6 month extension the haulage association are on to the govement as its getting a big problem with licenses running out, so do we drive without a license and risk it or lose the C1 and hope we can get it back later

Hoping that this might help others in a similar position regarding renewal of C1, I have produced this timeline of my application...

21st March.. Medical with D4 Drivers at Carlisle £55. Included Snellen eyesight test. The doctor provided the Form D4.

26th March.. Completed D4 medical together with completed Form D2, ( both forms checked and checked again!!) and old photocard licence were posted at local post office to DVLA by 1st class mail. Note.. I asked at Post Office for recorded delivery but he said that DVLA had stopped signing for mail ???.
Another Note... there was a slight delay in sending the forms as I didn't have a form D2 and had to wait for it to arrive from DVLA.
If you are due to apply for C1 renewal you can apply for a D2/D4 pack from DVLA.

3rd April started checking DVLA website every other day for any change in status of my licence.

21st March... checked above site and informed new licence had been issued.

23rd March... received new licence in post.

Note. Three years ago on my first application, the licence was applied for and renewed about three weeks before it was due yet the start date of my birthday was honoured. This time the new licence was dated from the date of issue, ie 21st April rather than 30th April.

So turnaround this time was 16 working days as Easter got in the way. I dont think that was bad considering the present situation (y)

I have just read on another site that the DVLA will send you a renewal form and that a medical is not necessary and the renewed licence will last for 1 year and then back to normal, using D47P.
See gov.uk/renew-lorry-bus-coach-licence/45-or-over.
Hope so as mine is due for renewal in August.
