When I turned 70. I let all mine go, including C1. However after about a year, we sold the caravan and bought a Motorhome again, Needing more payload I upgraded. So had to re apply for my C1. they sent me the form D4 which my Doctor filled in. sent back the (B1 only) licence and got the C1 on a new licence. They have it on record, and you do not have the re-take a test or anything, It`s paper exercise plus Medical and Sight Test.
I was out in Spain, Circa 2005. There was a guy who had had a big Winnebago parked up a La Manga for 2 full seasons. He wanted it back in the UK. In order to do it he had to return to the UK for a medical and get the DVLA to reinstate his HGV. (not just C1). He then drove it to Santander, and on arrival UK put it into a Garage for MOT. (I actually think it went to Dudleys Near Oxford) before driving it Home. I dont think the rules have changed, I got my C1 reinstated with no problems. When my class 1 HGV lapsed I was told I’d have to retake the test and that is the same for any category that is “lost” or “lapsed”. Very confusing!
