Have a look in a souk for someone selling what we called "squidgy dates" when we lived in Kuwait. They are dark brown but with a shiny smooth skin with no wrinkles in it. They are also very sticky.
The first dates of the year can be eaten when they are still green or when they are yellow. However, they are crunchy and not sweet and very much an acquired taste. They are called Khalal dates.
