Temporary Holiday Sites, what about us?

Many THS meets are held on school fields during summer hols, or on fields adjacent to existing campsites. The bigger DA‘s such as Leeds DA and Notts DA hold several THS rallies over the year.

Leeds DA hold one at St Anne’s Cricket Club over Xmas and New Year from Dec 18 2022 to mid Jan 2023. Its only 4 miles from Blackpool if that floats your boat.

Notts DA hold a THS at Wells next the Sea at a school.

No idea. Never been on a THS
Never been to a THS you've had a very boring life. Ran one over Christmas and new year for years for Lancs & Ches DA at a commercial site in Southport for years never had less than a 100 units from all over the UK, needed a holiday to recover tho

Yes, the two big clubs using a just turn up system can probably guarantee getting enough vans/caravans to cover the costs. I imagine the landowners will charge a fixed rate.
Jim

I am treasurer for the Eastern Region and we run THS etc. There are rules and regs about where and when you can hold a THS there has to be time between meets and certain facilities etfc. Landowners would generally charge a fee per unit per night (may or may not include VAT) it is then up to the organiser to charge what they want in order to cover costs and make a profit. Stewards are not included and genrally camp for free, they have to be for members of the club but have the ability to join whereas a weekend or 5 day meet can only be for members.

There are green papers available in the members section of the C&CC web site for this that include the relevant LA rules etc whcih most of the regs are based around, the links are below for members to look at, there are lots of other papers if someone cannot sleep at night:roflmto:

Attended York THS this year, it was full of funsters
#bargain loving funsters in the sun 😎
Unfortunately the THS at York, was the last one for a couple of Years. This is due to flood defence works taking place. The site is just a 15 minute walk along the River Ouse to Lendal Bridge right in the middle of York.

The York THS will be transferred to Pateley Bridge until completion of the flood defence work.

This is a field used by both C&MC and C&CC clubs during the year as a temporary holiday site of 7 or 14 nights duration. It is a field rented from the council with water and a lifted manhole cover, fenced off, as an elsan point. The group renting normally hire a skip for waste. The beach is opposite, supermarket next door and buses running past the entrance every 10 minutes. Last couple of years, £10 pun.View attachment 673501
Go there every year in August with South Yorks DA for a month bl**dy brilliant.

Could we get a list of the sites used by the big clubs? It will be worth contacting some of them and see what the score is.
St Anne’s cricket club I think - fylde coast

I started going to these last year after fitting my solar. Fantastic way to have a few (or more) days away at minimal cost.
Bradford on Avon (Beehive field, next to canal)
Limpley Stoke, next to Visitors center, again next to canal.
Cheddar, very close to town and Gorge.
All excellent venues.

As I understand it a 5 day meet is a section 4 exemption must be members only. Other than that members can be expected to bring all their requirements and take away all waste. ( of course facilities can be provided)
A THS is a section 6 exemption and must provide water, sewage and waste (skip).
These can include non-members if both the landowner and the exempting organisation agree.
I recall that in the past Jim you have said you don't run THSs because you don't have insurance for them.
Having talked to Stewards at CCC THSs it seems the landowner gets paid per unit per night, so there is no risk of not enough people turning up to make it pay.

Most Funster rallies are oversubscribed with probably many more people wanting to come so I'm sure we would get the numbers required to cover costs.

We have exemptions for 4,5 and 6. It is 4 that gives us 28 days.

Supervised and occupied sites exemption

This is known as a paragraph 4 exemption.

This exemption allows you (for up to 28 days) to:

  • use the site
  • let non-members bring and stay in their own caravan (if agreed with the landowner)
To be eligible for this type of exemption, you need to:

  • have someone to supervise the site
  • be able to sign a legal contract with the landowner or manager
  • consult local councils and planning authorities before using a site - and not use a site if the council objects

Approved sites exemption

This is known as a paragraph 5 exemption.

With this exemption, your organisation can select sites for its members to stay on, by issuing certificates to the landowner or occupier. These certificates are valid for up to one year.

Non-members are allowed to stay on the site if your club and the landowner agree to it.

You’ll need to:

  • set a maximum limit of 5 caravans at a time for each site
  • have a system for consulting neighbours and the local licensing authority (Natural England, or the Scottish or Welsh governments) before issuing a certificate
  • have a system for inspecting the sites and dealing with complaints from the public
  • send copies of the certificates you issue to Natural England, or the Scottish or Welsh governments (depending on where your club is based)

Club meetings or rallies exemption

This is known as a paragraph 6 exemption.

With this exemption, your club can use a site for club meetings, rallies or events. These meetings need to:

  • last no longer than 5 days
  • be supervised by a member of the club
  • be open to members only

We’re going on a C&CC THS later this month and have had to book on via their website and pay in full at the time of booking, which isn’t a problem to us. It’s being run by a district and the C&CC website routed us to the districts own web pages and booking page.
I suppose they’ll have a set number of places and will also want to know numbers as it’s at a cricket club ground.

Lancing College, West Sussex. They use to allow the use of the swimming pool but I think that has stopped.

A bit close for us we can see the college from our house.

Never been to a THS you've had a very boring life.

Yes, if only I'd known how much fun can be had with a van in a field my life wouldn't have been so dull :D

I think that the elephant in the room is finding enough reliable stewards to cover the entire event including before and after. Even the huge Leeds DA (which is an amazing organisation putting both rallies and THS on very frequently throughout the year, looking at their diary) often have to out an urgent call out for stewards as they are frequently short. Their committee is devoted to this and work really hard

The Stewards at the THS at York sports (rugby and cricket club) told me the 28 days was never wtitten in the original law and have always run they're THS for six weeks.
I have also been told that when different group in the CCC run THSs at the same site there must be 7 days between the events. Spitals Farm in Kendal springs to mind.

It shows too has to be the best ran and set DA around. Booking and refunds are quickly sorted.

Back in the 1990's & early 2000's ,we used to help steward the local THS , (before we started to go abroad) , that ran for then for 7 weeks , so the local DA members all took turns of doing stewarding for a week each shared with another couple , so that you could have some time off during the week with the other couples agreement , so that there was always someone in charge & on duty. We always bagged the first week to set up , mark out pitches etc , also so we didn't have too sort out other couples mix ups or blunders pitch wise or money,
The local DA made a small margin on all bookings , Campsite owner took the loin share (by the way he got over £7000 ) for the seven weeks loan of his one field , and the use of his campsite toilet/shower facilities .
A lot of campsites have a spare field that they hire out for rallies /THS's, then allow use of there facilities.

Jim There is a THS at Sandringham until the 9 Oct. £12 pn without EHU £16pn with. Why don't you nip down and have a chat?

will pm you a list of the sites going at the moment , there will be many more depending on dates.

We have paragraph 4 exemption which allows us to hold rallies for up 28 days. We are insured to rally together in fields, so I don't see an insurance issue

Neither can I, especially as a number of THS are less than 28days but surely, why cannot you just hold Fun Rallies, all you need is the field?

What an interesting and useful thread. Never heard of ‘em but really fancy it.

I tend to agree, when does a rally become a THS? when we do rally at Shrewsbury it's usually close to a week with people dipping in and out as they wish, has been pointed out above though who want's to volunteer to run a rally for a month?
